Pamela Gien's The Syringa Tree directed by Larry Moss is an astonishing one-woman show starring Kate Bloomberg. It is a story about growing up in South Africa during the early days of Apartheid. The background of the set reminded me of a shadow of a very large tree. The set is a plain stage with the exception of a swing. The swing appears to be attached to the syringa tree. The play opens with Elizabeth a six-year-old white South African girl swinging on the swing. The story is basically narrated through Elizabeth's eyes. Bloomberg's performance is superb. She transforms into many characters. She changes her voices and dialect throughout the play. She shifts her posture, as she becomes each character. At the beginning of the play I was a bit confused because I could not figure out whom each character was. As the play went on I was able to identify each character.
Bloomberg made a point of moving around the stage swiftly. Her movement and voice helped me get a clear picture of what character was speaking. There were not many monologues in the play. There was mostly dialogue between the many characters she played. Although she switches from character to character rather quickly the dialogue makes it easier to understand what character is speaking.
