If you were to go down the flight of stairs in the kitchen of my house, an uncertain, swinging light bulb would reveal through splintered and intermittent rays a dank basement cast in concrete and cinder block. As you descend the narrow, creaking wooden stairs spotted with chipping varnish, avoiding the low ceiling strangled by heat and plumbing pipes, you become aware of dimly-lit, almost primitive surroundings, reminiscent of an ancient, prehistoric cave. The floor is coated in dust and soot, the walls stained with a million once brilliant colors of paint, from crusades begun but never finished long ago.

When I was young, I loved this place. I would sit beneath the steps in the dark and look upon sights unseen, in the musty warmth of the boiler, taking in the cellar-smell all around me. All through my childhood it was refuge. My brothers would not seek me there because of the flight of stairs seemingly ready to break at every step, and the general gloom of the cellar which was too much for their delicate sensibilities.

However, when I had reached the philosophical age of fifteen, I began to draw a few less-than-encouraging conclusions from my love of this place. I remember seeing an ant in that cellar once. He was a real giant, black bulging body and antennae going like mad. He was a self-important little fellow, walking slowly but purposefully, with a kind of dignity. The ant continued its trek past me, oblivious to my presence, as though I were a hill, or a large tree, or perhaps the supermarket that he passed every day. It headed for a piece of dog biscuit near me which my dog had so obligingly left me earlier, and with some difficulty, loaded a small chunk on its broad, black back. It sauntered back into the darkness, then returned a few moments later for another piece, and another, and another.

I watched in a kind of fascination. This ant would live out its life in the confines of this cellar, in the dark, in obscurity, and none but I would know he existed at all. I pondered the injustice of this. I thought of my own fear of living my life in obscurity, of hard work, of carrying the load back and forth, back and forth, being perhaps a well-known little ant in my own circles, but not great enough to break through the veil of obscurity into public consciousness.

Insects and I do not generally get along, but I strangely felt no urge to crush this ant. I decided to let him live out his little ant-life in his private oblivion. As I returned to the first floor of my house, I thought of him. I would never see him again. If I did, I would have no way of knowing whether or not it was he or any of the other hundreds of thousands of slightly bigger than usual ants. I felt a strange, sad companionship with the little beast, and sat down to dinner, contemplative. When my parents questioned my unaccustomed silence, I merely shook my head, and remarked, "The unexamined life is not worth living." This gave my worthy parents some pause, but I did not think of them. I decided not to become an ant. I would henceforth live my life in relative daylight, if not in fame. I would not return to the basement. Except when my parents make me clean the floor.

The National Honor Society is the nations premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service. To be selected for induction into an organization of such excellence and high standard is not only an honor, but a privilledge.

There are numerous advantages in becoming a member of the National Honor Society. The best, in my opinion, is the recognition received for the years of hard work that my peers and I have contributed. Maintaining the high standards that got us recognize to become apart of the National Honor Society was not an easy task. High School today is filled with so many temptations, and the fact that we stood strong through all of them is an advantage within itself. We become apart of a group, not just any group, but a group consisting of our class's elite students. It's an honor to even be acknowledge as a canidate for such an outstanding group. National Honor Society also looks good on your college resume and other applications you might be filling out.

To my knowledge, there are no questionable problems are incidents that could be used to challenge my selection as an Honor Society member.

One of my favorite characteristics is my intelligence and intellect. I have the ability to quickly catch on to things, which is good for many reasons. Many people have told me my intelligence is a virtue. Intellect is also an important thing to posses. Being Class President and Flag Captain have put me in situations where my intellect, or my ability to apply reason and logic, had come in handy.

My least favorite characteristic is my outspokeness. I have a tendency to sometimes speak before I think, which is not a very desirable habit to possess. Outspokeness can be good in some situations, but if used the wrong way can turn out to be more bad than good. It's better to let your brain think, and not your mouth, because the impression you leave with people reflects on your actions and your choice of words. I have been working to improve this characteristic by simply taking the time to think before I speak.

Behavior is defined as the ability to conduct onself well. Students claiming membership in the Honor Society should always maintain high standard of behavior. They should be courteous to everyone, and respect others and themselves as well. They should have positive attitudes and postive behavior, and inspire others to do the same. They need to be able to work well with others, and be friendly. If selcted for induction, I will maintain this high standard of behavior. Behavior is a key factor to me, and even if Im not selected for induction, I will try to maintain the same high standard of behavior.

I fully understand retaining membership depends on the maintainance of the 6.5 grade point average. It is important to maintain good grades for scholarships and eligiblity reasons. This should not be a problem though, because good grades are a demand of myself, and my parents.

Becoming a member of the honor society would once again, be an honor and a privilledge. Being a canidate for selection into this group is an achievement within itself, and induction would be an outstanding achievement.

Five Observations from Missouri River Field Trip

¨In the middle of the Missouri River stood an old support of some type for a pipeline. At first glance, it appeared to be a feeble attempt at building a bridge, but after further inspection and information from our instructor, the concrete columns topped with a big mason rectangle turned out to be part of an old pipeline system. This area of the river was surrounded by sandbars and appeared to be very shallow. Along this part of the river grew many deciduous trees, growing in batches which were scattered throughout. The pipeline marked an area of the river which looked similar to when it did when Lewis and Clark explored the area, lacking the channeling for transportation of goods.

¨At the last stop of the tour, there was an enormous cliff-side facing the river. Different layers were apparent, and there was no evidence of man-originated excavation of rock to make way for the road. The gray, slate-like rock was very soft, broke easily and had several layers. Much of it had fallen, making the journey up the hill to the base of it, dangerous. On top of it was a harder rock, also with many layers though. It was yellow and whitish in color, with suspended birds nests. On top of that was the dirt layer, all towering to an approximate 0+ feet.

¨ As I was walking south along the river, I noticed this cottonwood tree growing over a rock base. The root system was semi-exposed with one half of it overhanging on the southeast side. The tree made a 60% angle with horizontal and had many dead branches, suggesting that a possible disease was present. It appears that, as time takes it toll, this tree will soon plop over across the road, wetting its fingertips in the mighty Missouri.

¨In the river itself, just off shore, floated an old rotting dock. This three piece dock was supported by pontoon-like aluminum devices, giving excellent support. The total length was approximately 0 feet and it was about 4 feet wide. A wire line kept it on shore. It was held together by joints, suggesting that it was collapsible and portable.

¨South of the dock, and east of the cottonwood, in the grasses just off shore, grew a an elaborate array of wildflowers. These brightened up the shadows cast over the area by the monstrosity of the towering cliffs nearby. Light reflected off the vibrant colors of the flowers, illuminating passers-by. There they grew, like peas in a pod, of different sizes and shapes and hues. It looked as if a box of Crayola Crayons threw up. Being the expert in pollen that I am, I was unfortunately unable to identify the species.

In the autumn of 14 Oskar Schindler lives in Krakow.

His wife, Emilie, lives in his home tows of Zwittau in Moravia. He's on his way to a party with commandant Amon Goeth who is in charge of the forced labour camp at Plaszow. In this camp there are 0.000 Jews, Poles and Gypsies. For some Germans at the party Schindler has brought gifts because he may need their support later on. On his way out he talks to the Jewish kitchen maid. She's treated badly and gives him money so that he can do something for her sister if she's put on a transport.

After the German occupation of Sudetenland he quickly becomes disillusioned with National Socialism. He is offered a job in Admiral Canaris' Abwehr Intelligence and is asked to gather information in Poland.

In October 1 he tries to set up a business in Krakow. Itzhak Stern, a Jewish bookkeeper, informs him about Rekord, an enamel factory. Schindler wants to get the factory running by Jews.

Schindler warns Stern against a raid on the Jewish ghetto. Synagogues are destroyed and on the eve of the Sabbath many of the worshippers are killed.

By the end of 140 Schindler's factory is employing 50 men, 150 of them are Jews. For Jews it is essential to have jobs that demand skilled labour in order to escape transportation to concentration camps. The SS often details Jewish workers to shovel snow, which harms production, but Schindler can do nothing about it. Many Jews apply for a job at Schindler's factory.

On March rd, 140 an edict is issued that the Jews of Krakow have to move into the ghetto.

On Schindler's birthday he receives kisses from Jewish girls. He is arrested and fortunately he is released after five days thanks to his contacts.

When some of his workers are missing Schindler finds out that they have been put on transport to a place with a new crematorium. Schindler gets his men off the train by representing himself as'General Schindler', the man in command of army supplies.

One day Schindler sees the SS rounding up Jews and shooting those who try to hide. This scene opens his eyes even further. He remarks that'Beyond this day no thinking person could fail to see what would happen.'. He resolves to do everything in his power to defeat the system and rescue as many Jews as possible.

An escaped Jew tells the full truth about the gas chambers. Further Schindler finds out that Jewish jewellers have to sort out gold and silver for the SS from dead Jews, some gold teeth are still covered in blood. These facts are believed and Jewish resistance becomes better organised and more successful. Schindler is not believed when he visits Budapest and tells all he knows about the extermination camps.

Back in Krakow there is a raid in the ghetto. Doctors at the hospital hand over cyanide to very sick patients because they know that there is no chance of escaping for them.

Schindler succeeds building an own labour camp for Jewish in Plaszow in order to give them better food and treatment, because at their first labour-camp food was sold on the black market by a German officer.

Many prisoners beg for a job at Schindler's factory and he does as much as he can, rescuing many Jews. Schindler sees to it that the prisoners get enough food and replenishes everything what is stolen from the regular quotas by the SS commandant. Not even a single SS guard is allowed to enter the camp. Bribing SS soldiers with liquor to rescue the lives of his prisoners is becoming normal. Schindler is spending like a compulsive gambler and the prisoners know that he would ruin himself if he continues spending like this.

In 144 the status of Plaszow is changed. Schindler sends gifts to the new bureaucrats in the higher SS echelon to keep the new situation just like that.

On Schindler's birthday the advance of the Russian armies has stopped and the SS is cleaning up traces for the Russians, camps in the east had to be vacated and in Plaszow the SS started burning bodies. In the meantime there has been an attempt on Hitler's life.

The Plaszow concentration camp is vacated and Schindler sends his own prisoners back to Plaszow to await relocation. Schindler wants to set up a new factory in Moravia because his factory is closed. He may take a number of prisoners with him and starts compiling a list with names of his Jewish on it. The German protest-letters do not get past Schindler's friend in Berlin and Schindler gets no resistance while building his new factory and camp in Brinnlitz, near his hometown in Zwittau.

The train with 00 Jewish women on it reaches the concentration camp instead of Brinnlitz and the transport of the women goes via Auschwitz where they receive hardly any food at all.

In the meantime Schindler has had to pay for his new camp himself and he doesn't expect to be able to start production again.

The Russians discovered drums of Zyklon B in a concentration camp and the world now knows about the gas chambers.

Fortunately the SS guard at Brinnlitz are no fanatics but middle-aged reservists.

Schindler is arrested by the Gestapo and it costs Schindler's contacts eight days to get him out of prison. The Gestapo is told that Schindler is essential to the production of secret weapons. Actually not one good shell is produced in his factory. All his army products fail all tests and Schindler fools the inspectors by buying shells from other factories and shows them instead of his own shells.

Schindler sends the commander of Auschwitz a case of liquor and other gifts to set the 00 women free and send them to Brinnlitz. The women arrive after a few more days and thanks to the good food and the medical care at Brinnlitz most of them survive.

In secret Schindler starts building his own arsenal inside the camp and forms three commando units of 5 prisoners each.

During winter 144-145 Schindler and another good German get a further 000 prisoners out of Auschwitz into the small camps in Moravia. His request for 0 metalworkers is granted. The Gestapo brings Jews, during transport escaped from trains, to Schindler's camp.

On Schindler's birthday in 145 white bread is handed out among the prisoners. Schindler makes a speech to all his prisoners and he uses his influence to have the SS removed. The SS begins to desert and other guards give up their weapons to the prisoners.

Schindler and his wife are dressed in prisoner's stripes when they leave the camp, accompanied by eight prisoners. They travel to Austria but they are captured by the French. After long interrogations their story is believed and they are released. Schindler is penniless for now. When the war is over Schindler immigrates to Argentina. He pays for his passage and that of six Jewish families, with money he has received from a Jewish relief organisation. His farm goes bankrupt and Schindler leaves his wife in Argentina and tries to set up a cement works in Germany, but this fails too. In 161 he is invited to Israel by some the "SchindlerJuden" and here he is finally honoured. The remaining years of his life he spends alternately in Israel and Frankfurt, never at ease, always short of money, until in 1868 the German government grants him a pension. In 174 he has a seizure and dies in a hospital.

Self-Esteem Understanding the Concept

Whether people know it or not, everyone has a self-esteem, but some

have better grasps on it than others do. Most peoples self-esteem

judgments are based on what they value, their beliefs or interests,

and the attitudes that they have (Beane, 1, p. 6). Therefore it is

impossible to escape the notion that someone doesnt have a self-esteem.

It is whatever they make it out to be, but not only do they choose their

own self-esteem, but others have a big part in deciding it as well.

I have two friends who are totally different in every aspect, especially

their self-esteem. My one friend Karis has a high self-esteem; she gets

good grades, is the star of the volleyball team, and has loving parents.

Davina on the other hand, has a low self-esteem. Shes not as bright

a student as she wants to be, nor does she play any sports, or have

loving parents. Her mother and father divorced a few years back, and

Davina has been forgotten ever since. She lived at her best freinds

house for a few years to finish schooling, as her father took off with

her little sisters and her mother moved away to start a new family.

Since her abandonment, Davina hasnt been the same. She is afraid

to speak in class, always scared that others will make fun of her.

Her grades used to be good, but now she has no confidence that she

can pass the tests. Gym is a nightmare as Davina is reluctant to wear

shorts, always professing that she is to fat. She will only sit with

her friend! s at lunch, to frightened to go out of her way and make

new friends, and she never smiles. Davina is convinced that everyone

talks about her behind her back, and when a teacher asks her a question

she slinks back in her chair, afraid of the snickers shell receive

if she gives the wrong answer. Self-esteem involves an individuals

sense of self worth (Beane, 184, p. 6), and Davina seems to have none.

Self-evaluations of a person physical appearance are defiantly linked to

self-esteem (Baumeister, 1, p. 5), and Davina hates the way she

looks.

Shes a beautiful girl and shed be so much prettier if she smiled once

in awhile, but Davina doesnt believe her peers. What a person thinks

himself or herself is going to show through their attitude and behavior

(Beane, 184, p. 6). It is also determined by what others think.

Friends and relatives can have a great impact on what a person thinks

of himself or herself. This can either be good or bad, and in Davinas

case, ! its awful. Since her parents walked out on her, she seems

untrusting of everyone except her closest friends. Even then it is

hard to get through to her, I think she has given up on herself, making

her self-esteem lower than is already is.

Karis has nothing but warmth and love at home. Her parents help her

study, commend her on her grades, and always brag to their friends about

how well she is doing juggling both volleyball and school. On the

refrigerator door her parents have put up all the carefully cut out

newspaper clippings that show Karis playing volleyball, her place on

the honor roll, and the pictures of her being inducted into the national

honor society. This certainly brightens Kariss spirits as she sees

how proud her parents really are of her, and I believe that this is a

big part of her self-esteem. Having her parents there for her around

the

clock really helps. It is very obvious that her parents are proud of

her.

Karis always goes out of her way to make people feel at home and she has

many friends because of it. In class she speaks loudly, projecting her

voice, even if her answer is wrong. She doesnt mind the snickers of

her classmates; she just shrugs it off and smiles. Karis doesnt think

down on herself at all, if anything, she may think to high of herself,

but she at least has a well-rounded sense of her self worth. If a

person sees themselves as competent in areas where they have set their

goals, then they will have good self-esteem (Baumeister, 184, p. 88).

That is exactly what Karis has done. She is happy with her appearance,

her grades, her volleyball achievements, and she really loves her

parents.

Maybe Davina just suffers from an identity crisis, which most

adolescence tend to struggle with, but I believe that the real problem

is that her parents arent there for her. If Davina had the approval

of her parents in the beginning, I dont think she would be this way.

I think that Davina feels that its her fault that her parents

separated,

and when neither wanted her, she lost all her self worth. She just

couldnt make the grades in school anymore, although she really wants

too.

If a person falls short of their goals and is unsuccessful, then they

will have a low self-esteem (Baumeister, 184, p. 88). I think that is

also part of the problem. Davina used to get good grades, in the back

of her mind she knows she could do it again. Unfortunately she lost

all confidence when her parents left her. Davina wanted approval from

her parents and was dependent on them to be there for her, like Kariss

parents are, but Davinas parents werent able to meet up with her stan!

dards, and so her standard of self-support wasnt available to herself

(Beane, 1, p. 104). All Davina needed was her parents to tell her

that she was doing good, that she wasnt fat, and that they loved her,

but instead they walked right out of her life. Rosenberg found that

adolescents are mainly concerned with what their peers think of them,

but those with low self-esteem tend to worry more about what others say,

unlike those will high self esteem (Baumeister, 184, p. 4). Just by

looking at my two friends, it is obvious that Rosenberg was correct in

his

assumptions. Karis doesnt care that much about what others think, but

Davina is always questioning and wondering what people will say about

her

if she does this or that. The teenage years are said to be the hardest.

This is when teens go through many changes, and have an identity

crisis

(Beane, 1, p. ). They are always trying to find where they fit in,

what their role is in life. Finding a good stable self-esteem is they

key to a healthy life and a good self-esteem.
