Life in the United States changed for the better due to the invention of the computer. Personal computers revolutionized the way people live their lives. From the novice computer to the most sophisticated central processing unit, personal computers are now accessible to everyone due to their availability and affordable prices. At home, every family member can use the personal computer. Dad can work on his golf swing, while mom finds new recipes, and their child can write his or her English paper. Like the personal computer, the Internet has paved the way for the future. The Internet has more information than any book can ever hold because the Internet is always being updated. The Internet connects people together from all over the world. Last week, for example, I was talking to my friend Aaron on the Internet. He is from the Philippines, half a world away. As a result, without the Internet available to me, my telephone bill would be sky high and I would not be able to talk to my friend as much as I would like to. Personal computers and the Internet have changed the world around us, but robots make our world easier. In the past, manufacturing a car was difficult and time consuming and sometimes deadly. With the computers inside the robots, making cars are now easier, less time consuming, and safer than ever. For instance, the Ford car company can now produce two hundred mid-sized cars in a span of a day. In the past, two hundred cars were produced in a month. Obviously, computers are taking us to a better and brighter future due to its ability to make things easier and more precise for us..

Women In The Middle Eas.Ira.The revolution in 17 brought some major changes to the way Iran functioned, especially the women. The fundamentalist government took over Iran, and began to change things. Women began facing repression, and they continue to face it. They are denied participation in public activities, education, employment and politics (Williams, pg.116). They are required to wear burqa's, which is a head to toe covering for women so there body shape is not revealed. The though of the fundamentalist government was that women are physically, intellectually, and morally inferior to men (Williams, pg.117). In 17, a stricter dress code was imposed on the women. Modern outfits such as skirts, and suits are not allowed, even underneath the burqa. Any other accessories are not permitted if they are glittery or showy. Their definition of women is the duty is to bear children, take care of the home, and provide comfort and satisfaction to their husbands. Some of the rules enforced on the women are the hejab, which is the dress code, and is mandatory in all public places. They cannot use cosmetics, obtain a passport without their husband's permission, and be in the company of men who are not relatives and many more. If any of these rules are not abided by, the punishments can include verbal abuse, 74 lashes with a whip, or imprisonment for one month to a year (Williams pg.117). When a lady is accused of sexual misconduct, it is legal for them to be stoned.

Women are thought to be incapable of making important decisions; therefore they are not permitted to be judges. Some women resist against these rules, and protest for their equal rights. One law use to be that they did not have custody of their children, but they fought for it and had a law passed that granted them some custody to the rights of their children. Within the government one can see a sufficient amount of corruption, an example of this is that in Islam temporary marriages are permitted, although the regime uses this as a way of having'prostitution' seem legal in an Islamic way. They do this by having a temporary marriage for an hour, which allows them in their mind to have an official network of prostitution (Williams, pg.11). This is regarded as twisting the situation...

Duck Shooting

If you order your college paper from our custom writing service you will receive a perfectly written assignment on Duck Shooting. What we need from you is to provide us with your detailed paper instructions for our experienced writers to follow all of your specific writing requirements. Should duck shooting be banned.

The unnecessary slaughter of ducks in Australia should be totally abolished. This cruel practice will eventually lead to more species becoming endangered, it destroys the natural wetlands and non-discriminating hunters are killing many protected species. There is no need, in a society such as ours, for anyone to hunt his or her own food and, basically, it is cruel.

Firstly, duck shooting leads to more species becoming endangered. Currently the waterbirds that on the game species list are the Pacific Black Duck, the Grey Teal, the Mountain Duck, the Hardhead, the Chestnut Teal and the Maned Goose. The more and more these water birds get hunted the less there will be of these species. Duck populations are increasing because of their habitat shrinking and water drainage. Shooting is not helping them at all. Killing ducks will ruin the food chain causing more extinction in other species.

If duck shooting continues, protected species and various plant life are injured, killed or damaged by hunters. It should be also noted that the damage is passed on to those consuming the affected birds, be they humans or other wildlife. Little is known of the effects of lead in the environment; the worst thought is the loss of whole habitats. Removing this sport from society will eliminate much unnecessary suffering of animals and lead to a safer and healthier environment.

Custom Essays on Duck Shooting

Thirdly, protected species are also being killed in the process of duck shooting. Many people mistake waterfowl that aren't currently on the game list for waterfowl that are. The NSW Democrat MP Richard Jones at Lake Cowral said "shooters couldn't tell if they were shooting at a protected species or not". He also declared that a'shoveller', a protected species, was killed within a 0-minute period of the opening of the shooting season.

As the submission to the Minister of the Environment states'there is no need to hunt ducks for food as there is much more meat on farm raised ducks than on wild ones, in actual fact, five times more meat' therefore we no longer have to hunt for our food. Another reason given is that hunting ducks for food is totally untenable, a very costly means of obtaining a meal, one that cannot be justified on economic grounds.

Finally, it is inhumane to hunt ducks. Many irresponsible hunters shoot purely for the pleasure of it. They are reckless in retrieving the wounded or maimed fowl. Many are abandoned or left to perish ending in much suffering. Statistics from the 1 Duck Report Bureau shows that four out of ten inspected ducks had been shot in a way that their death would have been a deep moral crisis, with evidence showing distressed injuries and neurogenic shock sustained. This tells us that shotgun pellets did not only injure waterfowl but birds were also injured by prolonged disturbance to their peaceful habitat.

In conclusion, duck shooting must be banned. This senseless practice ensures that there is much pain and suffering for the pleasure of a few individuals. The delicate Australian environment is being damaged as more and more species are threatened..

Leaders of the United States and Britain are under relentless questioning over whether they relied on intelligence estimates that deliberately exaggerated the threat of Iraqs weapons of mass destruction (WMD) to justify waging war. This is a matter of grave concern for Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi as well, since he accepted fully the American and British rationale for the war.In attacking Iraq without any specific United Nations resolution, the United States and Britain asserted that Iraq had to be relieved of its hidden weapons of mass destruction. To support their assertions, U.S. and British troops in Iraq are still combing the country in search of such weapons. But two months after the fall of Baghdad, the search has yet to produce any nuclear, chemical or biological weapons-nor even any evidence that Iraq ever had such weapons.Buy custom Iraq War Justified term paper

Hans Blix, the chief U.N. weapons inspector, questioned the nature of the many pieces of ``evidence presented by the United States and Britain in the U.N. Security Council before the war and has noted it is quite likely that Iraq destroyed its weapons quite some time ago.The first such ``evidence to come under scrutiny was a British government dossier that supposedly contained detailed documentation of Iraqs WMD development program.Released in September 00, this dossier says Iraq sought uranium from an African nation. When the International Atomic Energy Agency analyzed the document upon which the dossier was based, however, the document itself was found to be a fabrication. The dossier also stated Iraq had the means to deploy chemical and biological weapons ``within 45 minutes. But according to the BBC, this part of the report was ``amended by the prime ministers office to make it more impressive, and a senior intelligence officer has admitted the fabrication.``Completely and totally untrue, British Prime Minister Tony Blair said in dismissing allegations his government had overstated Iraqs weapons capability to justify the war. But Britains Parliament has decided to conduct an inquiry into whether Blair was right in deciding to wage war.In the United States, the Defense Intelligence Agency has recently admitted having compiled a report last fall that included an analysis concluding there was no solid evidence to substantiate a claim that Iraq had chemical weapons. The Senate is looking into the accuracy of the intelligence the government was given.President George W. Bush counters criticism from Congress and in the media by saying the war liberated the people of Iraq. He is obviously determined to justify his action, even if no weapons of mass destruction turn up.Indeed, the Iraqi people are free of the tyranny of Saddam Hussein. But the very fact that all these questions are being raised in the United States and Britain is proof that wars must never be waged without justification. If the two nations indeed exaggerated the threat of Iraqs weapons of mass destruction, it would be even more reason for the international community to be apprehensive about Bushs ``pre-emptive strike doctrine..

The very word "Viking" conjures up images of fierce, uncivilized warriors and pirates who attacked and wrought havoc on the Christian countries of Europe from the 8th to the 11th century. However, they are a much-misunderstood people and it is not easy to unravel the truth from legend. To begin, they were not peoples from one land, but from three Denmark, Norway and Sweden, coming from an area of northern Europe known as Scandinavia. However, there was no unity, and wars among these three Viking nations were common. The word "Viking" is a general term (possibly derived from the word "vig" which means "fighting") to describe all Scandinavians of this time. Another more accurate term is Norseman (meaning men from the North). Although they did lead piratical raids against the Christian countries of Europe, the Vikings were not uncivilized barbarians. They were excellent navigators, great traders, and were skilled in the arts of metalwork and carpentry. As told by legend, raiding cities, towns and monasteries may have been a quick and sometimes easy way to get rich; it was not the only means by which Vikings supported themselves. For a majority of Vikings, the resources they needed to survive came not from pillaging, but from the seas, the fields, and the forests around them. Based on archaeological finds such as sickles, picks, hoes and ploughshares and the preserved remains of animals and plants, we now know the Vikings were very skilled craftsmen and highly successful farmers. As seafarers, they felled the trees of Scandinavians forests to build their famous cargo ships to trade these goods with each other and with others across Europe and parts of East Asia. They also shaped the iron commonly found in the bogs of Europe into tools and weapons, and also turned traded and ill-gotten gold and silver into stunning jewelry. Relying on local materials, they built homes of wood, stone and sod to create large and well-organized communities in the areas of Europe they conquered and settled. They even contributed to the language of the areas they eventually colonized. The Vikings were also explorers. Their ships, which resembled open canoes, were able to navigate the shallowest rivers and cross the widest oceans even in very poor weather conditions. From Sweden, Vikings rowed and sailed the rivers of Eastern Europe that lead to the Black Sea and ultimately the Middle East. The exploits of Norwegian Vikings lead them west to settle Iceland in 860 and still further west to colonize Greenland about a hundred years later. By the end of the first millennium they had even reached and set up at least one camp in North America, some five hundred years before Christopher Columbuss arrival in 14.In 8, a Norwegian Viking, Eric the Red, sailed to a little explored, uncolonized island west of Iceland. He named the island Greenland, and in 86 he led 5 ships full of settlers across the Atlantic Ocean. Only 14 ships arrived in Greenland, but enough people survived to establish a colony. About 18 years later, a sailor named Bjarni, who was on his way to Greenland, was blown off course and sighted land even farther west. Leif the Lucky, the son of Eric the Red, retraced Bjarni's course. In about 1000 AD, Leif landed somewhere on the coast of what we now call Canada. He named this new territory Vinland.

Help with essay on The Vikings

Although the Vikings did settle in parts of Britain, France, Iceland, and Russia on a permanent basis, they were not seeking to conquer these lands. They were opportunist pirates who took advantage of the chaos following the collapse of the Western Roman Empire in Europe. They were certainly warlike, but they were not barbarians, as often is as depicted. They lived, for the most part, in an ordered and civilized society. Viking warriors, however, were feared throughout Europe for their ferocity. Viking warriors had no fear of death. If they died on the battlefield, it was considered to be an honorable death. To surrender or be taken prisoner would have brought shame and dishonor to their families..The Vikings did not have military uniforms. Unless a Viking warrior was chosen to fight in the kings army, he was responsible for making his own fighting clothes and weapons. Hence, like ordinary Viking dress, the type and style of a warriors clothes varied from place to place across Scandinavia. Despite this, there were some similarities. One similarity was practicality. A warriors clothes were designed to allow him to fight without anything getting in the way. His clothes had special features to protect him from the blows of enemy swords, arrows and spears. The clothes also kept him warm while traveling to the next raid. The average Viking warrior wore a one-piece outer jacket usually made of leather. The jacket was both tough and warm. Beneath it, he wore a linen or woolen tunic. This tunic often hung lower in the sleeves and around the waist hem than the jacket. The tunic was usually colorful and nicely decorated. Wool socks and goatskin or calfskin shoes were worn on the feet. A silver Thors hammer, a good-luck charm, hung from a chain or leather strap around the neck. Some Viking warriors had an extra piece of protection, which was a wire mesh covering called a birnie or chain mail. However, it was heavy, very time-consuming to make, and expensive to buy. Consequently, only the Kings warriors wore it. A Viking warriors headdress was a helmet made either of leather or metal that fitted snugly on the head. The last thing a warrior would want was a loose helmet blocking his vision. Metal helmets were conical in shape and were mainly worn by the kings warriors. Some leather and metal helmet designs often included a reinforcing strip of metal along the center seam. This piece extended down over the nose for additional protection. Some designs included a goggle-like protection around the eyes too. Whether it was made of metal or leather, Viking helmets did not have horns as often pictured in movies, cartoons, or fictional books. Horned helmets would have been extremely cumbersome in battle. The Vikings practically invented the blitzkrieg or surprise attack. There would be no warning before they struck. They sailed quickly into a port and then robbed, and killed everyone in their path until their raid was finished. Then, as quickly as they arrived, they departed. The battle was often over before the enemy had a chance to react. If the Vikings faced an enemy waiting on shore for their attack, the first battle tactic used was fear. Their dragon-headed ships, blood red striped sails, and berserker warriors probably frightened even the bravest enemy. This tactic proved so successful, the government of Paris paid the Vikings in silver coins not to attack and gave them part of France, now called Normandy, as their own land. The Vikings had a reputation of being fearless fighters. When not outnumbered, they fought hand-to-hand combat. When in trouble, they often formed a tight circle and defended themselves to the end.Nothing is as symbolic of the Vikings as the longship or drakkar. Also called a dragon ship by its enemies, the drakkar was really a warship designed to carry fearless Viking warriors on their raids across Europe over a millennium ago.The average length of a longship was 8 meters. The largest ever excavated was seventy meters long. Its sixty oarsmen could swiftly deliver as many as four hundred warriors to a battlefield along the coast or well inland via a river. Like most large drakkars, it was owned by a powerful king. He was the only one who could afford to build it. In the last days of the Viking Age, three hundred of these longships were in the Viking fleet. The average longship owned by an earl or nobleman carried a crew of twenty to thirty oarsmen. They rowed the ship when the winds were slight or calm. Other crewmembers included a helmsman who steered the ship, a lookout that watched for rocks in shallow waters, and a few spare men who took the place of tired oarsmen or replaced one lost overboard during a storm. The remaining men onboard were warriors, eager to do battle or to raid a community and rob it of its riches..The longship was very sturdy, and yet flexible enough to withstand the waves of stormy seas and light enough to be dragged overland between two lakes or rivers. The prow, or bow, was sometimes tipped with a very ornate carving of a snake or dragonhead, thus earning it the nickname dragon ship. The prow ornament was removed while the ship was at sea. Replacing such a finely carved piece would be expensive, and losing it might be a bad omen. Red dye was added to give the sail a vivid crosshatched pattern. Sometimes the whole sail was dyed a solid red color. The choice of red, the color of blood, was meant to strike fear into the hearts of the Vikings enemies. The sail was hoisted and held in place on the center mast with ropes likely made from walrus hide. Once it caught a steady breeze, the sail could move the ship a very swift twelve knots. If the winds were calm, twenty to thirty oarsmen could move the ships briskly through the water at about five knots; the same speed as a quick walking pace.In conclusion, the Vikings were a proud, honorable, law-abiding people who valued warfare and personal reputation (they called it word fame') above almost anything else. They brought the seafaring ship to Europe and, by their constant depredations, spread its use far and wide. In only 50 years, they set their mark on the law and language of many countries and made many European communities see themselves in the light of a nation state for the first time. In terms of human history, if you blinked, you would have missed them! But the image the Vikings promoted of the brave, hardy individualist, unafraid of the world in all its forms, remains with us all as an example of how a man should conduct himself in adversity. Wealth dies, kinsmen die. Cattle die and the wheat, too. But this thing never dies word-fame! Word-fame never dies for he that achieves it well..

The pushing forces behind the revolution were the ideas, leaders and movements. Without the three of these things working in unison the possibility of achieving revolution would be near impossible. Each of the three work to back up the others, without the support of the others, they would not work anywhere near as effectively. The first to be derived and the most important of the three were the ideas. Without them the other two would not have been possible. Liberty was the most prominent idea of Revolution, the concept of capturing their own emancipation from the British was the most appealing theory of the time. The concept of liberty was not the original belief however. Over the time, ideas were altered and born to fit with the current events. Another outstanding idea was that of "no taxation without representation" first said by Patrick Henry at the House of Burgess 1765, this notion spread threw the colonies and was often used to demote the British of their right to tax. Equally important were the leaders and movements. However without some kind of leadership the movements would not have been able to run smoothly. Without the leaders of the resolution there would be no control, chaos would reign and results would be difficult to obtain. Two perfect examples of leadership through the revolution were George Washington and Samuel Adams. One a dignified statesman, the other a radical propagandist each man inspired American colonists and helped lead them to the freedom they so greatly desired. Washington led the Continental army, and was in turn elected the First American President; Samuel Adams was the co-founder and leader of the Sons of Liberty, Americans most famous extremist group. This links directly to the movements of the Revolution, the movements were what gave the patriots the colonial backing and in the end secured the support they required to push the idea of liberty to the final stand. The movements, such as the Stamp Act Congress, often gave birth to new ideas, which were then spread throughout the colonies, the men who deliver these ideas often became the leaders of this new concept they created. The movements were also the pushing force behind the federation of the thirteen colonies, as often at these congresses it was desired to have a delegate from each colony. The two continental congresses offer a perfect example of how movements effected the revolution. It was at the Second Continental Congress of 1775 that the colonies banned together and declared war on the British.

Custom writing service can write essays on Ideas, Movements and Leaders in the American Revolution

Without ideas, leaders and movements I believe the move for independence would have proved impossible for colonist, these three factors were the driving force behind the Revolution. Without ideas there would be no leaders, without leaders no movements, and without movements no inspiration to finally break free from a tyrannical government. Without the three working simultaneously one must agree, there would have been no revolution..

And approximately for chores and an extra with from the cook that is 10 ponds per week. But it doesn't buy you a good birthday present for your friend unless you cut back on free time or sweets or chocolate. Now let me tell you about my brother he is years younger then me (). So that should make me…… 10 but VERY soon 11. 5th September that is also when I am going to boarding school the same as my pal Vic (or Vicky or her whole name is Victoria). In 7 days.My brother is called Richard but only likes to be called Ricky. And me! The card always has a picture of where she is..My dad well me and Ricky think he is dead and we try to ask mum but she just sends an email saying everything she has done but no answer. It is kind of strange I mean we want to know but she does not answer. My brother is nice but fussy sometimes. He is my only friend when Vic has gone. But now (with loads of extra chores done and temptation) they (owners of the orphanage) got me in.I have to go now it is dinner time but I may be able to write in u later on.Dear diary.Well it is tomorrow I could not write in u I did not want to get caught otherwise I would have to do more extra chores. Not much has happened my mum is in France now I got a postcard of the Eiffel tower. Should I tell her? Should I tell my brother? Can I tell the orphanage.I will ask Vic.She says she thinks mum knows and I can tell my bro if he won't blabber it. And the orphanage should not know. How does mum know I mean I did not tell her and yeah. Ill email her to see what the hell is going on.Great help mum she says can not talk all I have time to say is I will see you soon..Well I hope so since it is my birthday so she needs to come before school starts. 5 of September..Oh great.I will be travelling on my birthday. How much does that suck.Oh well c ya.Dear diary.4 days until the school and my birthday.I have already packed and everything. Can not wait for my mum to come she might come today or in the next days.I am oblivious on what to do.It is so boring it is way too hot to go outside. And nothing but chores that awaits inside. Well we all share a living room I guess it is homey. It has a living room we all share. Yeah that means the TV. Too! They let us have a mini portable cd player. Not a big one u know those ones that have ear phones I geuss it is not bad.Well back to the living room it is wooden with a rug in the middle. With a coach(obviously)In a sort of maroon/red colour. It has a stereo and a medium colour TV. It does not have sky just the basic 4 channels. In the mourning and afternoon there is cbbc which some kids watch. I like short change and animal ark..They have bookshelves of books but they are all classic and old and falling apart. And yeah. Now there is a study with comfy chairs and loads of bookshelves with loads of books..And there is 5 desks with 5 computers with no games apart from card games and kiddy games that help little kids learn English and maths stuff like that. There is carpet in here is blue. Did I mention all the walls are white.Well now I did.Any way my room is a pale purple carpet and white walls, with posters of cute animals and the presenters from short change and animal ark.Vic is carpet is a light orange/yellow and has stars and animals. My brother's carpet is dark red and cars and punk stars on his walls.I am gonna go out but I am nervous about the school maybe it will be like h.p. (harry potter). Dear diary.Only days left and mum has not come yet. She will though but how do I know? She told me and she rarely brakes promises well she never makes promises and she did not make a promise. Oh but I was sure she would come. Oh well let me tell you about yesterday..Well we did go outside and we did play but we played noodles and charades..And Viccy said she would help me with the magic stuff. And she would give me private lessons. And I did not tell my brother my mum did in a email she sent us.Hello and I will still see u soon jessy and the school ur brother should know by now that u r going to a witch school and he will be going to a wizardry school when he is ur age.Go to go ciao xxxxxxx mum.Any way sorry I could not write much I have told u everything that is going on and what I did. I will tell u how much money I have 5 from the cook. from the cleaning lady. from one of the babysitter people and 5 for looking after the smaller children and playing with them I did not know there babysitter person was so generous! And 5 for allowance that is 1 ponds! Wow I think I will go and buy some stuff from the shops w went to get my witch stuff I needed. I am going now going, going, gone. Not bad I got a small black mouse I had enough (1 ponds) and a small cage (5 ponds) and a drinking bottle went with cage and a BIG bag of food came with the rat. I just need a small bowl I can easily take one from the kitchen. But the people of the orphanage aren't supposed to know. But that will be VERY easy they hardly check in my room because I keep it reasonably clean. How many days left? OH YEAH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. But I should not raise hopes of mum coming because yeah.Me and Vic are going to do a midnight feast every night until we start school. So we both have to buy the same amount of sweets, chocolate, bread and drinks. It is going to be so exiting! Well I think it will be. At least it is something to do. Well I better head out to buy some sweets, chocolate and drinks.I am waiting until midnight.. Tonight I am going to her room and vis versa tomorrow and on the last night we will go to my brother's room and have it all together. When I was out buying sweets they gave the swets to me in some kind of bowl so I can use that for my mouse which I have not thought a name for. Well it is almost 1145 P.M. I need to go to the loo and I will probably read after that. Wait no! I will go to the loo at midnight and then head to Vic's room her room is next to mine so then they don't hear me go out twice and they will think that is my room. Well I better get the sweets, chocolate and drinks ready I will talk to you tomorrow mourning okay? Okay bye..

Internet Bankin.Internet banking is the new method of banking using the new technologies available in the world today. Instead of needing to travel into a local branch of your bank, the Internet allows you to do a wide variety of useful things with your accounts. It can be accessed from anywhere that there is a computer with the Internet, and of course unlike bank branches the net is open 4 hours a day 7 days a week. The services available online vary from bank to bank. Most of the general services are on all banking websites but the larger banks contain more control over your money. Here are some of the things that are possible •View your account balance.

Help with essay on netbanking

•Pay your bills (With the help of programs like'B-Pay.•View records of transaction.•Transfer money to linked accounts with the same ban.•Transfer money to specially selected unlinked account.•Order printed payment review.•Pay for shares.•Check interest in your accounts.•Send money oversea.•Change your detail.•Open new account.•Receive advice on handling fund. These are not all of the services available because each bank is different and in the competitive nature of banks they are always offering new features to attract investors. These features are open to both individuals and businesses (businesses have a few more options).Everything has upsides and downsides and unfortunately so does online banking. First of all obviously it does not deposit physical money nor does it withdraw bank notes, which means you will still have to make a trip to the bank to do those things. The fact that online banking is done over the Internet means that safety and security is a big issue.Only 8 percent of Australian websites surveyed by Australia's consumer watchdog had some kind of privacy policy. A further 7 percent would not say whether they would disclose private information to other companies many people are receiving advertisements from companies that they had not done business with or even heard of before both through mail and electronically, for example through email. It is very possible to have your information stolen while it is being passed across the World Wide Web due to the latest surges in technology, sometimes even PIN numbers and user names are possible. In the near future, it is predicted that businesses will know who you are, where and how much money you have to spend etc. Every time you use electronic devices like credit cards, mobile phones, the Internet, even signing up for a competition your details are being recorded. A new science called biometrics will be able to identify people with retinal scans, fingerprints, voice or DNA samples. While being secure it will not be too anonymous which is why there are fears of moving into an Internet/electronic age of banking. On the other hand there are the obvious reasons why net banking is becoming popular and banks are becoming more and more online-aware It is so much easier being able to access accounts from literally anywhere in the world at anytime than finding a bank branch and visiting it during normal business hours. The whole process also gets done much quicker than by physically talking to a teller and waiting for them to process the service. All of the things that can be done by a teller can be done on the website of your bank and there is plenty of help and tutorials to help, and so far the services are listed in the first question but there will be many advancements in the new technology when more banks begin to cross to electronic methods and start to compete for online customers. In order to first begin to use a net banking service from your local bank, you must first have access (preferably regular access) to a computer with access to the Internet. When you go online direct your browser to the website of your bank (you should check with your bank what the website is). Most banks will have a large link to net banking or otherwise use the search option to find it. There is a short process involved to receive a user name and password for online banking follow the onscreen instructions, it usually involves a phone call and working days to mail online details to you.Once you have logged on into your bank's main account area there will be several options available to you an outline of these were covered near the start of the document. These options will come under different headings as links, simply click on them to take you to the list of features available..As an example, BankWest (at www.bankwest.com.au) has four options at the top of the screen daily banking, where you can select accounts with the bank, bill payments where you can pay your bills with funds in your accounts, service center containing lots of options regarding your accounts (like printouts, statements, details, orders e.g. new cheque books) and my profile where you can change your personal details.Despite doing your banking over the Internet being somewhat of a security issue it is obviously much easier and faster than talking to tellers and your local and branches. It is using new and advanced technology, which is fast evolving meaning that this method of banking will accelerate much faster in the coming years...

The best way to learn a new subject or skill is to study small segments or details in great depth rather than to start by trying to develop a sense of the whole.

I quite disagree with the speaker¡¯s assertion in which he factitiously separate the learning of segment from that of the whole in the process of learning a new subject. Process, varying from the growth of an organism to the learning of a subject or skill, should include the developments of both the segment and the whole that are always combined together in the process.

In the observing of the growth of, say, a tree, no one can see that it is after the full growth of the trunk that the branches and leaves begin to grow; a tree grows by the growth of its trunk, its root, its branches and leaves simultaneously. A tree is not its trunk, its roots, branches or leaves; neither, a tree is the simply coalescence of them. It is by the interaction and interdependence, which include absorption and transmission of the nutrient and the creation and transfer of chemical information, that each part of the tree grows and the concept of tree comes into being, and this should be the essential meaning of a tree as a whole.

What I say above is by no means nonsense. Conversely, it underlies the general concept of ¡°system¡±, which is useful to elucidate the inner meaning the issue implies.

Write my Essay on "The best way to learn a new subject or skill is to study small segments or details in great depth rather than to start by trying to develop a sense of the whole."

The concept ¡°system¡±, can not exist without the existence of its components. But the components are not what we are to emphasize in my purpose of introducing the idea of ¡°system¡±; it is the very connection and relationship of the components that signifies.

English, as a foreign language, is a compulsive course for Chinese students. If we regard it as a system, then the words are its components. No one is expected to remember every item of all words, and then begin to study how to organize a sentence by syntax. It would be a stupid way that ignores that language is more than a pile of words, but rather a series of rules that is established by usage and represents the conventional relationship between the words. The latter is in deed what we need to understand and read. The number of words is limited, but the usage is protean; by the sense of whole we can use the limited words to create sundry passages, and in turn, we have a better understanding of the word in certain style.

And basket ball, for instance, is another example. Michael Jordan is not the player who runs fastest, and neither he pass the most skillfully, shoot the most precisely. But he is reputed to be the best. In the court, the sense of the whole is most important; each motion should be followed fluently by the next one to finish an effective attack. This ¡°follow¡± is the real skill that represents the genius of a player, by which the components--the discrete motions--are coherently unified as a whole.

In sum, the learning of a skill or a discipline should be regard as a process in which the segments are understood and unified to a whole which has its inner interconnection, and a discrete pile of segments is useless..

The two songs I chose to analyse are " The Great Disappointment " written by Davey Havok from AFI and performed by AFI, " Hollowed be thy name " performed by Cradle of Filth, writer unknown. The theme that I thought was the most important in both of these songs is disappointment. I will be discussing how this issue is presented and developed in these two songs by comparing, contrasting and using intertextuality. To help me, I will be using three main conventions Structure, Music and Lyrics.

The "structure" contains three main parts verses, chorus and ordering of ideas. " The Great Disappointment" has three main verses and one main chorus while " Hollowed be thy name" has ten verses and no chorus which gives us a feeling as though the narrator is telling us a story rather then a song. In both of the songs the ordering of ideas changes from positive to a negative. In the great disappointment the author's point of view changes from hopefulness to disappointment when he realises that the "white creatures" and the " amaranth" that he has been wasting his life for while searching, hoping and waiting for, aren't real. They are only in his dreams, a sick twisted joke of this own subconsciousness. In the other song the ordering of ideas changes from despair, confusion and fear of death to anger and disappointment when he realises that religion, god and afterlife the things people dedicate their whole lives to believing and following is a lie " just a strange illusion".

The main parts of the "music" are tone/mood and rhythm. The mood that " the great disappointment" gives off is a gloomy, sad and the tone of the voice is very frustrated sometimes whispering, sometimes screaming. The verses are calm, sad and the chorus is very loud, angry even. This makes " while I waited I was wasting away" sound like a very strong statement.

Order College Papers on Lyrics Analysis

The lyrics section contains conventions like language, repetition, title, rhyme and imagery. The language in both of these songs is normal, grammatically correct. In my opinion the "amaranth" and the " creatures draped in white " in the great disappointment are metaphors for angels, purity, happiness love and joy. He is wasting his life by waiting for these " creatures to appear" for purity and happiness to appear but then he realises that the creatures purity is all in his dreams, that it doesn't exist, that the world is never going to be pure innocent pristine and full of happiness, joy and love. Symbolism is widely used in the great disappointment. The white chrysanthemums can mean just that a white flowers or it can mean purity and innocence. Amaranth can mean a never withering flower or it could mean a never dying love. No symbolism is used in Hollowed be thy name, the lyrics are pretty straight forward and mean just what it says, while the great disappointment has a lot of metaphors and symbolism and may have more then one meaning but despite these differences they very well present the theme - disappointment. In some songs it is not just the chorus that is repeated. The repetition in a song shows that the narrator wants to point these words out that he wants the listener to really understand what they mean. The lines " I never, never wanted this, I always wanted to believe" and " I never, never wanted this, from the start I've been deceived" in the great disappointment are repeated a number of times because the author is trying to tell us that he never asked for this. He never wanted to waste his life on something that was a lie, an illusion, a dream! This clearly shows his despair and disappointment. The title is one of the most important parts of a song. It represents what the song is all about. The title in the great disappointment states the main theme of the song, disappointment. The title " Hollowed be thy Name " is showing that the narrator thinks the idea of god as being empty, hollow and fake. It shows his frustration and disappointment with the idea of god, with the fact that everyone believes in something that doesn't exist just like in " the great disappointment ".Rhyme is usually the similarity in the end-sound of words at the end of the lines. "The great disappointment" does not rhyme while the other song does. The rhyming gives the "hollowed by thy name" more of a song feeling, since it does not have a chorus..Imagery is the picture that the narrator is trying to show us and make up imagine. The author of "Hollowed by thy name" is trying to show us a picture of the Middle Ages, Europe, him in a cell, then being marched out to the Gallows Pole to be hung. He is trying to show us a picture of him standing there and a bunch of people watching him, people screaming out of cells, and him finally being executed. Davey, the author of " The great disappointment", tries to show us a picture of beautiful white flowers, soft creatures draped in white, a beautiful wonderland, when suddenly it all fades away, everything turning to grey and Davey disappointed, sitting around waiting for them to appear again, cutting and hurting himself only to see if he's still alive, then finally realising they we're real , that they were only in him dreams..

Review on "Bowling for Columbine.Bowling for Columbine is an alternately humorous and horrifying film about the United States. It is a film about the state of the country, and about the violent soul of America. It questions why 11,000 people die in America each year at the mercy of gun violence, and shows how the public is yelling from all directions to blame everything from Satan to video games. This is not a film about gun control. It is a film about the fearful heart and soul of the United States, and the 80 million Americans who must live in fear that they may be shot any day, and at any time even if they happen to be an innocent bystander, in the path of gang warfare, armed robbery or a teenager who has gone of the rails.Bowling for Columbine is a journey through America, and through their past, hoping to discover why their pursuit of happiness is so riddled with violence..The documentary covers stories from the Columbine High School security camera tapes to the home of Oscar-winning NRA President Charlton Heston, from a kid who makes homemade napalm with The Anarchists Cookbook to the murder of a six-year-old girl by another six-year-old during the school day.

Write my Essay on Bowling for Columbine

What made this documentary so effective were not the resources used as such, but the way in which they were presented. He tried to gain information from both sides of the argument, so not to show a bias view of the subject at hand. It is due to the use of both sides of the storey, that Michael Moore is able to manipulate the feelings and views of the audience. By gaining the ability to manipulate the viewer's emotions, Moore is able to more effectively present his view on this issue.I personally walked into the movie, not truly thinking about how horrendous some of the daily events occurring in America due to guns really are. This documentary has the power to suck you in, and portrait the true story at hand. This is achieved by the use of archived footage, in conjunction with figures of death and interviews with certain persons.Michael Moore puts his points across quite clearly, by the way in which he interviews certain people in different ways. He did not interview the mother of an innocent six year old child shot during a school day in the same harassing manner as he did with the NRA president. Also by performing actions such as getting ammo banned from Kmart, due to the wishes of two survivors who became seriously injured on the day of the Columbine shooting. He presents himself as caring towards the innocent people who are harmed each day due to the violence achieved with guns, he himself is a member of the NRA, but this does not mean that he condones the actions of the minority who abuse such powerful weapons. The documentary does not only make you think about the problem that America is suffering with guns and violence, but indirectly makes you consider certain actions that America makes world wide. It claims to be the master of violence, and the country that can bring liberation to those countries suffering from war, violence and poverty. When in fact the country can not even look after itself domestically, how can America claim to be bringing satiability to the rest of the world, by the use of military presence, when it can not even control violence at home. The documentary concludes with a view that there is only one major factor that is causing the violence and horrendous actions within America, this is not video games, movies, history or the work of the devil. The factor at large is that of "FEAR." Fear is driven into society by those at the top of society's tree, how can a country expect to live in peace, when its own government tells its people that everything must be feared and self protection is essential? It can not help the cause, when television stations decide that their nightly presentations will include as much violence and terror as possible, because it brings good ratings. It seems to me that the American way of life is so built up over power and wealth that thousands of lives are not worth saving each year, if this means the loss of money due to reduced gun sales and other factors that hurt the economy in any way..

After attempting to clean the coins in soft drink, most of the dirt was washed off but after trying to clean the remainder of the dirt off was quite hard as being in dirt and mud for several weeks, the dirt has dried onto most of the 0 cent coins and is rusted onto the face of the coin. For even more scientific results I believe you should leave the coins in the soft drink for another 15 minutes and then the coin may be 100% clean. The results of the experiment was fascinating as I thought that Fanta or Pepsi Max would clean the best because Fanta has a lot of colours and sugars in it and Pepsi Max is very sweet with sugar. æCarbonated water ¡V contains dissolved carbon dioxide gas

.Politics is assuming command of the American economy in the form of pervasive "equal opportunity" enforcement. In today's society, All people are supposed to be equal and have equal rights, but in employment there is more discrimination now than ever before. American citizens need to do away with affirmative action so that American job opportunities can be based on merit and not on skin color or ethnicity.Laws have been passed, quotas have been established, and seemingly everything has been done to prevent discrimination. NOT SO! Instead of solving a problem these new laws and quotas have discriminated against the once over powering white male. What happened to America being the land of opportunity? The general theory is if you work hard, and are the best qualified then you'll get the job; but in today's work place this no longer the situation. Now, in order to be employed, qualifications do not always matter as much as the color of a person's skin or his/her ethnicity. In dealing with this subject, the first question that is always asked is " What's wrong with hiring a variety of African Americans, Hispanics, and women?" The answer is Nothing. The problem is not with hiring those from different ethnic groups, but when the most qualified of them gets the shaft because he/she is not of a certain ethnic or minority group. More and more white males are being discriminated against because they are not African American, Hispanic, or they don't have breast.Affirmative Action, action in the form of quotas and special treatment for "protected classes," has resulted in a politicized process in which white males have been discriminated against. A 14 poll shows that one out of every seven males has lost a promotion due to quotas. White males have become invisible victims because the idea of merit hiring has been subverted by politicized hiring, and that has left the white males defenseless against this open discrimination.Help with essay on Aff Action

This problem is only getting worse because America has more equal employment laws than any other country in the world (Counting Costs). Many companies are afraid of these laws, and the fear of political punishment makes quotas very hard to research. Companies go beyond what is required to avoid all legal issues, Xerox, one of many companies that uses quotas, states "We have a process that we call balanced workforce." At Xerox, all of the employees understand this policy, and it is measurable by its goods and relative numbers (Brimelow and Spencer). Sears and Roebuck Company spend 15 years and 0 millions dollars to defeat the EECO discrimination suit. Sears prevailed because they were able to show proof of a voluntary quota program. Many companies cling to such programs as a future defense in federal courts, even if it means putting up with some unqualified and incompetent workers (Brimelow 77).Not only is affirmative action hurting white males, but also it's causing problems with the minorities that it's supposed to be helping. Many minorities are insulted that the government thinks they need special help to compete in the job market. In contrast, some would also be extremely offended if this help would be taken away. Black police Chief Clarence Harmon was once an advocate of affirmative action until he realized the effect that it has had on his race. He has been quoted with saying that when he was going to school he enjoyed competing and keeping up with his white counter parts, but he now realizes that many times in the police academy, blacks students use affirmative action as a crutch. Black students have been found to score lower than the white students do. Harmon believes this is true because they do not think they have to work as hard, which produces less qualified black officers (Glastris 4). Carl Marx insisted that for any sort of class consciousness to arise, there must be communication of a common sense of oppression, but no one can feel this sense of oppression (Glastris 48).The masss media rarely recognizes quotas, much less portrays white males sympathetically. "White males have been easily and silently victimized one by one" (Brimelow). With neither conservatives nor liberals making affirmative action big deal, a classic spiral of silence has occurred whereby people assume that their doubts are not shared and suppress them, thus mutually intimidating each other. People are left feeling that nobody will help them. Other problems include male psychology that "real men don't cry." Men would rather hold all their emotions inside than share them with friends and family (Brimelow 76). Most people know that quotas do inurn hurt people; however, they do not know that quotas are illegal. The 164 and 11 civil rights acts explicitly banned government imposed quotas, but, nevertheless, they immediately spread through the economy. Although quotas are becoming more and more popular, there is incredible denial in the people's eyes (Brimelow 77).Affirmative action, while a regulatory burden, is not massive in scale. Supporters of affirmative action insist that the 11 civil rights acts did not impose quotas, although its key points were to override the supreme court decision and make work force racial imbalance prima facia evidence of employer discrimination (Brimelow and Spencer). California's democratic representative Don Edwards, who is a mouthpiece of civil rights establishment, claimed on the New York Times opinion page that quotas did not exist. This was said within three weeks after the Supreme Court ruled about them.Facts are facts; quotas and affirmative action are still harmful, and a big part of our workplace. Expense of imposing and complying with quotas and affirmative action is extremely expensive. In 18, companies and organizations spent 00 billion dollars. The "opportunity cost," which is what the economy might have achieved without the misallocate affective quotas, amounted to at least 6% of the 18 GNP (Gross National Product). Which was an amount equivalent to that spent on public education that year (Brimelow and Spencer). The revelation of these figures is needed to show the dangers left politically motivated employment policies.Affirmative action hurts all Americans white males, their families, the protected classes, and every other American by hurting the economy. Affirmative action needs to be done away with so we can make America the great and fair country it once was. People once came to America to be free to work hard and earn a job. Will people now come because of their skin color or their sexuality? Martin Luther King said that he would like to see the day in which his children were not judged because of their color, but because of the content of their character. Every time affirmative action is put into use, our countries is taking another step away from the good King's goals. All men are created equal.. Works Cite.Brimelow, Peter. Spiral of Silence. Human Perception in Beauty, Business, and Governmen.

How you perceive beauty can affect with whom you choose to live your life. Additionally, others perception of you and their biases can affect what kind of life society allows you to live. Perception and bias also effects your working relationships with coworkers and clients. Risk perception can result in possibly unnecessary government regulations that cost a lot of money. Perceptions and biases can have diverse effect on different aspects of current American life.

Beauty may only be skin-deep, but research suggests that beauty can help you become more successful by using people's perceptions and biases. In his article, Charles Feng describes what the beauty ratio is and how it affects people's perception of you. Feng describes how, in ancient Greece, philosophers sought the source of beauty. Plato thought the source to be in the proportions of human faces (Feng, 00, para ). Modern investigators are discovering that not only is it proportions, but that symmetry of the human face can also greatly affect how people gauge the beauty of a face. Body proportion and the waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) can also cause positive and negative perceptions. In his research, the author found "that the hourglass-body standard of beauty in women, previously thought to be `universally preferred, was in fact likely swayed by advertising" (Feng, 00, para 18). In his study of human faces, the researcher discovered that women's preferences for male faces varied dependant on which part of the menstrual cycle they were. Menstruating women preferred "soft-featured male" (Feng, 00, para 1) faces, to hard masculine faces. Within the animal kingdom, Feng points out that, "Female swallows . . . prefer males with longer and more symmetric tails, while female zebra finches mate with males with symmetrically colored leg bands" (Feng, 00, para 7). While most of his arguments relate to Western civilization, the animal kingdom analogies point to a possible evolutionary cause for bias towards perceived beauty. Specifics may vary across cultures, but the similarities of perceived beauty across cultures also indicate an evolutionary advantage for beauty. One possibility that Feng mentions is that facial symmetry relates to efficient immunity and strong genes. In times of survival, those with a symmetrical face would more easily stand the test of evolution and procreate successfully (Feng, 00, para 8). In life, perceptions of beauty can make you prosperous; while in business, you must negotiate perceptions and biases to your advantage in order to prevail.

In his article, Todd Schraml describes the inherent problems in business with communication and perceptual listening. He describes what happens as we listen to others, "we delete, distort, and generalize that incoming data" (Schraml, 00, para ). Based on our personal perceptions and biases, we absorb different information than anyone else receiving the same information. The author takes this to the business world by describing how perceiving different information can cause problems when trying to supply a specialized product to a customer. He uses the example of the color purple in his analogies. In different situations, the interpretation of perceived information can have surprisingly different results. When talking about a pretty flower, the interpretation of the color may not have any deep significance. Yet, when specifying a color for a product, differences in interpretation can have a negative result. Giving specific information and examples when possible is the best way to overcome the differences in perception that result in poor communication. In business and government, it is best to ensure you and the person you are communicating with are sharing and receiving the same information.

In an article for the Cato Institute publication, Regulation, the editor discusses American Government policies for safety. The editor drew his information from a 11 Cato Institute conference during which many risk analyst experts presented their papers. The risk analysts and their papers covered a broad range of topics from health, to the environment, and automobile safety. A problem identified by the editor was the issue of media and its affects on the public's demand for safety regulations. "Few dimensions of modern life reflect a larger divergence between the perceptions that affect government policy and the available evidence than those that bear on the safety and health of the American population" (Viskanen, 11, Para 1). Examples brought up were the chemicals found in the soil at Love Canal and Times Beach, radiation from Three Mile Island, and pesticides in food. The editor felt that the environmental contamination of these locations, which brought about heavy policy changes in the U.S. Government, did not actually pose any actual health risks for the people exposed to them. He claimed that "Chemicals in the environment account for only about percent of the avoidable (non-genetic) incidents of cancer" (Viskanen, 11, Para ). Michael Gough, a microbiologist cited in this article, claimed that "if we eliminate all of the carcinogens that EPA can regulate, we will see no improvement in cancer rates" (Viskanen, 11, para 4). The media's blasting of so-called risky behaviors has prompted much government regulation that can become very costly. The Cato Institute's conference held three themes. The first theme involved individual perceptions of risk compared to true risk. When availability heuristics are involved, and an individual has experienced an event; an individual's perception of risk for that event tends to be accurate. Once the media or government warnings are involved though, biases occur in individual perceptions of risks. The editor goes on to claim that when an individual pays the costs of a risk-reducing behavior, their perception of the risk tends to be more accurate than when they do not pay the cost. This lead to the definition of the value of a life within the realm of statistics to be between $ million and $10 million (Viskanen, 11, para 5). The second theme revealed at the conference was the inconsistencies of government health and safety programs. The EPA requires a $100 million per statistical life cost for environmental carcinogen regulations. While highway design solutions, which cost less than $1 million per statistical life saved, are not put into practice. The third theme of the conference involved where the government, media, and the public get their evidence for the risks associated with behaviors (Viskanen, 11, para 6). This article brings into question the policies made by the U.S. Government for the public's health and safety. It also brings up some interesting questions about the cost of human life and what statistics to use when calculating the efficacy of a new policy or regulation. It all comes down to perception of risk in life. Everyone has a different perception of the risk of an activity. The U.S. Government strives to regulate people or activities to reduce a perceived risk. The American population requests that regulation by the government due to the media telling them it is a risky behavior. The ultimate question generated by this article is who determines risks and their consequences.

Everyday encounters are greatly influences by your personal perceptions and biases. Many times in life, reality is perception. As you experience life at home and work, it is important to note any biases you bring to the encounter. Once identified these biases can be worked on and minimized. It also helps to be a clear communicator and good listener. Reducing biases and errors in perception can help to reduce conflict in all aspects of life. Awareness of personal biases can also aid you in experiencing more in life as you allow yourself to engage in more opportunities. Reference.Feng, C. (00. December). The Pilgrims came on December 6, 160. Originally headed for Virginia, the Pilgrims were set off-course by storms and settled in Plymouth, Massachusetts. They came looking for a new life that would give them freedom of religion and started the New England colonies. The Middle Colonies grew between the 1600s and 1700s when thousands more people from Europe came to find a new way of life. The first settlers to set foot in America were the settlers of Jamestown, Virginia. The people of Jamestown came looking for profit. This area became part of the Southern Colonies. By 1750, the Southern Colonies had the most land settled.NEW ENGLAN.With the bulk of the early settlers living in villages and towns around the harbors, many New Englanders carried on some kind of trade or business. Common pastureland and woodlots served the needs of townspeople, who worked small farms nearby. Compactness made possible the village school, the village church and the village or town hall, where citizens met to discuss matters of common interest..Good stands of timber encouraged shipbuilding. Excellent harbors promoted trade, and the sea became a source of great wealth. In Massachusetts, the cod industry alone quickly furnished a basis for prosperity. The Massachusetts Bay Colony continued to expand its commerce. From the middle of the 17th century onward it grew prosperous, and Boston became one of Americas greatest ports..

Cheap College Papers on History of the Early Colonies

Oak timber for ships hulls, tall pines for spars and masts, and pitch for the seams of ships came from the Northeastern forests. Building their own vessels and sailing them to ports all over the world, the shipmasters of Massachusetts Bay laid the foundation for a trade that was to grow steadily in importance. By the end of the colonial period, one-third of all vessels under the British flag were built in New England. Fish, ships stores and woodenware swelled the exports..New England shippers soon discovered, too, that rum and slaves were profitable commodities. One of the most enterprising -- if unsavory -- trading practices of the time was the so-called triangular trade. Merchants and shippers would purchase slaves off the coast of Africa for New England rum, then sell the slaves in the West Indies where they would buy molasses to bring home for sale to the local rum producers..THE MIDDLE COLONIES.The people in the Middle Colonies came from many different countries and society in the middle colonies was far more varied, and tolerant than in New England. In many ways, Pennsylvania and Delaware owed their initial success to William Penn. Under his guidance, Pennsylvania functioned smoothly and grew rapidly. Though the Quakers dominated in Philadelphia, elsewhere in Pennsylvania others were well represented. Germans became the colonys most skillful farmers. Important, too, were cottage industries such as weaving, shoemaking, cabinetmaking and other crafts..Pennsylvania was also the principal gateway into the New World for the Scots-Irish, who moved into the colony in the early 18th century. They hated the English and were suspicious of all government. The Scots-Irish tended to settle in the backcountry, where they cleared land and lived by hunting and subsistence farming.. By 1646 the population along the Hudson River included Dutch, French, Danes, Norwegians, Swedes, English, Scots, Irish, Germans, Poles, Bohemians, Portuguese and Italians. New York best illustrated the multilingual nature of America. The Dutch continued to exercise an important social and economic influence on the New York region long after the fall of New Netherland and their integration into the British colonial system..THE SOUTHERN COLONIES.In contrast to New England and the middle colonies were the predominantly rural southern settlements Virginia, Maryland, North and South Carolina, and Georgia. The desire to get rich was the driving force behind colonization of the Southern Colonies rather that the desire fro religious freedom. The climate in the southern colonies was warmer than the climate in the middle colonies, so people grew large crops of tobacco, corn and wheat. By the late 17th century, Virginia and Marylands economic and social structure rested on the great planters and the farmers. The planters of the tidewater region, supported by slave labor, held most of the political power and the best land. They built great houses, adopted an aristocratic way of life and kept in touch as best they could with the world of culture overseas. Not bound to a single crop, as was Virginia, North and South Carolina also produced and exported rice and indigo, a blue dye obtained from native plants, which was used in coloring fabric..SOCIETY, SCHOOLS AND CULTURE.A significant factor deterring the emergence of a powerful aristocratic or gentry class in the colonies was the fact that anyone in an established colony could choose to find a new home on the frontier. Thus, time after time, dominant tidewater figures were obliged, by the threat of a mass exodus to the frontier, to liberalize political policies, land-grant requirements and religious practices..Of equal significance were the foundations of American education and culture established during the colonial period. Harvard College was founded in 166, the College of William and Mary was established in Virginia in 16, and in 1701Yale College, was chartered. But even more noteworthy was the growth of a school system maintained by governmental authority. In 1647 the Massachusetts Bay Colony required that every town having more than 50 families to establish a grammar school (a Latin school). The Puritan emphasis on reading directly from the Scriptures, however, underscored the importance of literacy. (Faragher, pp. 61, 14.In contrast, the wealthy planters and merchants of the Southern Colonies, imported private tutors from Ireland or Scotland to teach their children. Others sent their children to school in England. Having these other opportunities, the upper classes in the Tidewater were not interested in supporting public education. In addition, the diffusion of farms and plantations made the formation of community schools difficult.. Faragher, John Mack, et al. Out of Many. rd ed.
