The two songs I chose to analyse are " The Great Disappointment " written by Davey Havok from AFI and performed by AFI, " Hollowed be thy name " performed by Cradle of Filth, writer unknown. The theme that I thought was the most important in both of these songs is disappointment. I will be discussing how this issue is presented and developed in these two songs by comparing, contrasting and using intertextuality. To help me, I will be using three main conventions Structure, Music and Lyrics.

The "structure" contains three main parts verses, chorus and ordering of ideas. " The Great Disappointment" has three main verses and one main chorus while " Hollowed be thy name" has ten verses and no chorus which gives us a feeling as though the narrator is telling us a story rather then a song. In both of the songs the ordering of ideas changes from positive to a negative. In the great disappointment the author's point of view changes from hopefulness to disappointment when he realises that the "white creatures" and the " amaranth" that he has been wasting his life for while searching, hoping and waiting for, aren't real. They are only in his dreams, a sick twisted joke of this own subconsciousness. In the other song the ordering of ideas changes from despair, confusion and fear of death to anger and disappointment when he realises that religion, god and afterlife the things people dedicate their whole lives to believing and following is a lie " just a strange illusion".

The main parts of the "music" are tone/mood and rhythm. The mood that " the great disappointment" gives off is a gloomy, sad and the tone of the voice is very frustrated sometimes whispering, sometimes screaming. The verses are calm, sad and the chorus is very loud, angry even. This makes " while I waited I was wasting away" sound like a very strong statement.

The lyrics section contains conventions like language, repetition, title, rhyme and imagery. The language in both of these songs is normal, grammatically correct. In my opinion the "amaranth" and the " creatures draped in white " in the great disappointment are metaphors for angels, purity, happiness love and joy. He is wasting his life by waiting for these " creatures to appear" for purity and happiness to appear but then he realises that the creatures purity is all in his dreams, that it doesn't exist, that the world is never going to be pure innocent pristine and full of happiness, joy and love. Symbolism is widely used in the great disappointment. The white chrysanthemums can mean just that a white flowers or it can mean purity and innocence. Amaranth can mean a never withering flower or it could mean a never dying love. No symbolism is used in Hollowed be thy name, the lyrics are pretty straight forward and mean just what it says, while the great disappointment has a lot of metaphors and symbolism and may have more then one meaning but despite these differences they very well present the theme - disappointment. In some songs it is not just the chorus that is repeated. The repetition in a song shows that the narrator wants to point these words out that he wants the listener to really understand what they mean. The lines " I never, never wanted this, I always wanted to believe" and " I never, never wanted this, from the start I've been deceived" in the great disappointment are repeated a number of times because the author is trying to tell us that he never asked for this. He never wanted to waste his life on something that was a lie, an illusion, a dream! This clearly shows his despair and disappointment. The title is one of the most important parts of a song. It represents what the song is all about. The title in the great disappointment states the main theme of the song, disappointment. The title " Hollowed be thy Name " is showing that the narrator thinks the idea of god as being empty, hollow and fake. It shows his frustration and disappointment with the idea of god, with the fact that everyone believes in something that doesn't exist just like in " the great disappointment ".Rhyme is usually the similarity in the end-sound of words at the end of the lines. "The great disappointment" does not rhyme while the other song does. The rhyming gives the "hollowed by thy name" more of a song feeling, since it does not have a chorus..Imagery is the picture that the narrator is trying to show us and make up imagine. The author of "Hollowed by thy name" is trying to show us a picture of the Middle Ages, Europe, him in a cell, then being marched out to the Gallows Pole to be hung. He is trying to show us a picture of him standing there and a bunch of people watching him, people screaming out of cells, and him finally being executed. Davey, the author of " The great disappointment", tries to show us a picture of beautiful white flowers, soft creatures draped in white, a beautiful wonderland, when suddenly it all fades away, everything turning to grey and Davey disappointed, sitting around waiting for them to appear again, cutting and hurting himself only to see if he's still alive, then finally realising they we're real , that they were only in him dreams..
