Unfortunately, very few people think seriously about women. The position of women in society has changed dramatically over the years. Women were first seen as property no matter what color, or race they were. As the years went by, women started to slowly make progress and they started to break the social acceptance that women were "good just for the kitchen" in society, but they were still were still devalued. Women were given the opportunity to go to school and get an education. They were also allowed to vote in the 10's. This was a major accomplishment for all women. As far as employment goes, the "majority of the women are employed, and now number close to half of those in the workplace." (Andersen, p. 1). Most women have moved upward to good paying, professional positions.

These changes can lead us to believe that women have proven to themselves to be equal, but unfortunately, they have not. For example, a woman, in most advertisements, is photographed with something over there mouth. This is saying that what women have to say is not important and, therefore, they should keep shut. There are certain obstacles and biases that have existed that have pulled a woman downward. In other words, there exists something called "oppression", which refers to "social forces that tend to'press' hem them in and block their pursuit of a good life." (Johnson, p. ). These social forces include race, gender and class.

For example, a woman lawyer would have to prove that she has knowledge and that she is a competent attorney, while a man can walk in straight from law school and already be "accepted" as a lawyer in society. Women are also portrayed as less capable of making rational decisions than men. For some reason, men think that when they go out in public, they won't be sexually harassed or assaulted because they are "MEN", and if they are victimized, they won't be asked by other people their explanation of what they were doing when this happened. There is also a sense of discrimination when hiring and promoting a woman in the workplace. Studies have shown that the percentage of females in the police department is very low and many women are overlooked for promotions. This is mainly because it is accepted to believe that the police job is a man's job. According to men, women cannot handle being a police officer. Having stated all these examples, it is evident and apparent that women have an unequal status.

Not only are women devalued compared to men, but also women are not privileged because of their color and class. Besides the fact that poor, women of color are more likely to be a victim of the law and as a result, be punished, they are considered and labeled to be pretty much "trash" or less in society. According to Johnson, people assign women to a social category that bears this name, and as a result, they are treated differently. They are seen as the ones who are more likely to become criminals and those who will never advance in the world. They have placed a barrier in front of these poor women of color. Being "white" is a privilege and an advantage. White people are "lucky" because they have things that make them more valuable and these things are denied to others, like black women, because of the group that they belong to. A good example of this is when white people apply for a car or house loan. Nine time out of ten, the white person is more likely to have the loan approved compared to black people. White people also do not find themselves being placed in jobs that do not go with their race. For example, black people will most likely be seen in occupations such as support positions or garbage positions. White people will be seen as bankers and executives. If you go into a jail or a prison, you will see the majority of prisoners to be black and Hispanic. Very rarely do you see many white people in jail. The problem is that the authorities are so busy trying to catch "black and Hispanic" criminals that they tend to ignore and forget the white people's crimes.

According to the Miller's article, gender interacts with race and social class to affect the sentencing decisions of juvenile justice officials. Poor black female offenders, for example, are seen to be a whole different group when it comes to deviance compared to the white female offenders. They are treated and sentenced much more severely than the deviance of "powerful". Female offenders are discriminated against and their punishment treatment is harsher. Compared to men offenders, they are also treated more severely. White females are seen as "tender, warm, quiet and gentle", but African American females are seen as "aggressive, rebellious, rude and loud". This is not true in general. There are "aggressive, rebellious, rude and loud" white females around too, but the problem is that society has it that Black females are the ones who are supposed to be labeled the "bad girl" no if's and's or but's. They are all treated according to their class and race, unfortunately. Racial and class bias goes according to the social structure. It depends on whom you know, who your parents are and what you have to offer in society. Society categorizes you as a specific racial group, not as an individual person. We are conditioned to believe that lower income families are less valuable that other groups.

According to the law, "women acquired their rights in the 0th century. In order for a woman's rights and responsibilities to be determined, they had to go by her status as a wife and mother." (Price & Sokoloff, p.). Back in the days, a husband would not get prosecuted if he were to rape his wife, but now, thank God, they are brought to court in front of a judge if something of that nature happens.

In conclusion, before the law, women are seen as equal today, but that is not the truth. They still face obstacles to be able to be seen as equal, especially, in terms of racism. "Women who are immigrants, racial or ethnic minorities, in same-sex relationships, or dating or married to a police officer, may face additional obstacles in their attempts to access the justice system as a means to escape violence or exploitation." (Price & Sokoloff, p. ). No matter who these women are, who these women know, and how hard they try to fight to improve their status and condition, they will always be seen as a lower class, they will never have the equality, and they will always be devalued no matter where they go. This is what is meant when it is stated that the relationship between gender and the law cannot be understood apart from the systems domination and subordination of race, ethnicity, class and homophobia. In society, it will always be accepted to believe that women will always carry labels and men won't. Somewhere in the world, a powerful man decided to write a law that stated that women would always be punished for just being born a woman and they will never be treated equally.

At the University of Michigan, we are committed to building an academically superb and widely diverse educational community. What would you as an individual bring to our campus community?

At my high school, I am involved in many things. I am a very diverse an accepting person. I get along with many people from many different groups and statuses. I would bring a lot of individuality, intelligence, and creativity to the campus community. Though these are qualities that already occur on your campus, it is never a bad thing to add to them. At your campus I would be able to express myself in ways that weren't offered to me at my high school simply because it would not be accepted by peers or even by the school. By attending your university, I would be around fellow students who also want to express themselves in new and creative ways. Working on expressing myself with others who share the same creativity and interests could bring about a lot of good.

Along with my individuality and creativeness, I would also bring leadership skills and great academic abilities. I have taken part in many activities in my school and my neighboring community. By doing this, I have developed skills to help keep me on track in life and academically. I am self-disciplined, I know what needs to be done and how to make it happen. This would be good to bring to your campus because it would keep me on track with school and my studies, but it would also be beneficial for things that I would be taking part in after school such as some of the various clubs, groups, and organizations.

The Lewis Carroll show at the Art Institute of Chicago is a very interesting as well as different exhibit for me. I didn't know what to expect at first because I didn't know much about his work so everything that I did see was all new to me. It was very nice for me to get the chance to experience such a great photographers work especially knowing the hardship of trying to get some of the value and textures that he got in his pictures I knew how to appreciate it. I saw meaning in some of his pictures and some were not as obvious. He told stories in his photos as well as basic straightforward images to show the obvious reason for the pose and the surrounding as well. Some of his photographs were more interesting than others therefore I was drawn into those and away from the others. The pictures that caught my eye were because of the quality of shade, tones, value, and texture they showed. I noticed that almost all of his photos were of young girls most by themselves and some with others.

One prime example of his pictures with meaning that shows great quality in texture and shads would be "Captive Princess". This is a picture of a young girl standing in a corner looking sad as if she has no choice but to be there. She's dressed to look like a young princess; he shows this with a long white dress with a golden shiny belt along with a crown on her head. Although the picture is black and white I can tell that her belt is suppose to be gold by the texture that it has on it. He had to have wanted to show her as if she was struggling. I can tell this by the wrinkles in her dress, he could have made the dress look nice and clean but he brought the texture and made it look older. She looked as if she was backing up from danger and had no where else to go. She holds her head slightly tilted to show weakness and hide her face as if she doesnt want to show fear almost as if she wants sympathy. Her hair is rough looking like it haven't been combed in days and he made sure to show the texture in it as if that was a big part of the picture. He has the girl pose right next to the corner and makes it so that it's obvious while also showing the contrast in the wall so that the corners stands out. Almost everything else is very dark as if he dodged and burned to make it look like someone was watching her from the dark. He shows very good quality and in every way possible and made the picture look so natural. I like the fact that he had so many things to show in such a simple photograph it was very interesting.

Another photographs, which he did, that seem to look very interesting to me was "The Prettiest Doll in the World". This also is a picture of a young girl standing alone but this one has more of a relaxed look to it. The girl is standing there with an innocent look on as if she's just the sweetest thing in the world looking away as if she doesn't know that he is taking the picture. Carroll brings out the texture in her hair like in the other photograph but her hair is healthier. Her hair looks long and clean as if he was trying to show it as being perfect. He shows good value in her face to show that she has smooth skin like a doll. The contrast in her cloths shows real nice and it stands out with the very dark areas to gray and the light areas next to them. He has everything around her looking very dark as if she was thinking this composition up in her mind. On other parts he has it look as if he literally set the photograph on fire and put it out. It's a very nice picture; I like the way he set it up to make his statement.

He has many photographs that have good meaning and make statements but there are also some that tell stories. One great example of Lewis Carroll's work that shows a story is "Saint George and the dragon". He shows many things with the composition of this photograph that I never saw in one picture. It‘s also interesting that he has all of the characters in the picture played by little kids. The picture shows A young girl dressed like a princess in the corner with a boy lying on the ground as if he is a dead knight next to another kid under a rug like object posing to be the dead dragon. There is one kid on a toy horse with a sward bigger than he is in his hands. He is just holding the sward but it looks as if he is pointing it in between the young girl's legs. To make it seem like that's what the entire composition in the photograph was about. The white on her dress to show that she is pure and now that the knight has killed the dragon he can have her. It had good value in the picture every image was equal but the young girl because of the white dress. Carroll used the fading look on this photograph in a circle and the entire picture looked like a dream. I like this photograph for the most part because of the quality in value. But I think that the composition could have been put together better.

Overall the Lewis Carroll exhibit was a very nice experience for me to have. I think I might want to go back to see a few more photographs and look more into the composition of them and analyze what I see. Therefore I can learn how to make more of a statement with my work that I do.

What does the tragic myth mean precisely for the Greeks of the best, strongest, and bravest age? What about that tremendous phenomenon of the Dionysian? And what about what was born out of the Dionysian the tragedy? By contrast, what are we to make of what killed tragedy Socratic morality, dialectic, the satisfaction and serenity of the theoretical man? Could not this very Socratic way be a sign of collapse, exhaustion, sickness, and the dissolution of the anarchic instinct? And could the Greek serenity of later Greek periods be only a red sunset? Could the Epicurean will hostile to pessimism be merely the prudence of a suffering man? And even scientific enquiry itself, our science indeed, what does all scientific enquiry in general mean considered as a symptom of life? Case Study

Homosexuality

"A Matter Of Social Justice"

MB is a wife and mother of three children. One weekend she had lunch with her favorite cousin, Gina, who was getting married to discuss her upcoming wedding plans. In the course of the conversation MB asked Gina how her brother Mike was doing. Mike is homosexual and had recently broken-up with his long-time significant other. Gina told her that Mike was doing much better and that he was dating a wonderful man who was an elementary school teacher. MB asked where he taught but Gina could not remember. During the lunch Gina showed MB some pictures of a recent family gathering that MB and her family had missed. In one picture was Mike with a man who looked very much like Rich Curtis. MB asked who he was and Gina informed her that this was the nice guy Mike was dating. MB was completely taken aback. Mr. Curtis was one of the most popular teachers in their local elementary school. In fact, he taught her son Nicholas and coached him in basketball. Everyone loved Mr. Curtis from the kids to the parents. The fathers especially like him because he was on Duke's dream team that had won the NCAA Basketball Championship a few years ago. And the mothers were always trying to set him up on a date with one of their friends. Gina also mentioned that Mike was bringing Rich to the wedding. MB didn't know if she should say that she knew him.

During the car ride home she found herself full of questions. She had always loved her cousin Mike but since her marriage they had grown apart because MB's husband, Dominic, was homophobic and didn't want Mike anywhere near the kids. She could not even imagine how Dominic would react when he found out about Mr. Curtis. She then remembered that Mr. Curtis was taking the class to Washington, D.C. for an overnight field trip next month. Of course, there were other parents going on that trip but what would her husband think. Should she tell him? Was this something that anyone had the right to know? Should she tell Gina that he teaches Nicholas and that if he comes to the wedding Dominic will cause all kinds of problems for him? Should she tell Mr. Curtis that she is aware that he is dating her cousin and that she and her husband and the kids would be at Gina's wedding? Or, should she just say nothing and find a reason not to go to the wedding?

MB always thought of herself as open-minded and as being non-judgmental of others. However, this was her son's teacher and coach. In addition, in her 10 years of marriage she had never kept anything from her husband, yet she knew if Dominic knew about Mr. Curtis that he would demand Nicholas be taken out of his class and would demand that the other parents be informed. As a Catholic she had been raised to accept everyone as an equal. She had done that all her life until her marriage when Dominic made such an issue about her cousin Mike. Dominic would call Mike names like "faggot" and "queer" in front of the kids. He degraded him in private and yet MB never said anything. Now this could affect a good man's career. Ethically, what should she do?

As a person, I have many aspects of a reliable, energetic, and excellent student. I became a member of the National Honor Society in my junior year. You have to hold four decisive factors to be chosen. The four factors are to have leadership, service, character, and be highly academic. I have done many services not only for my school but also for the community. I have joined many clubs such as Environmental Club, Key Club, Student Council, and also been part of the Girl's Tennis Team. I have also kept many leadership positions. I was the secretary of the Environmental Club in my junior year and was currently been chosen to be the president. I am also the co-captain of the girl's tennis team and an executive member of the student council. I became a member of the National Honor Society in my junior year. I have received First Honors and also the Principle Academic Award since my freshman year.

I have always liked to aid others in anyway I can. I have volunteered at the Meadowlands Hospital and helped the patients. I would get them water, food, and even get them a newspaper or magazine to read. I am involved in many school clubs and participated in many school and community activities. Being part of the girl's tennis team, I would help my teammates by being there for them if they need advice or help them in something they have trouble with. Also part of the Key Club, we go to nursing homes, shovel snow for the senior citizens, and other things that we can help our community.

I am interested in studying pharmacy because since I was small I wanted to be interacted with people and go into medicine to help other people. As I did my research, my interest in pharmacy grew. Pharmacy is a practice of compounding the dispensing drugs. They are involved with their patients and inform them the use, hazards, interactions, and side effects of any drug that they give out. I have been involved in many school and community activities. I believe that I would be a great asset to your community and would benefit because it would help reach my goals.

Photographs are the way people can see the world through a piece of glass. The photographer chooses how much, or little, they want the viewer to see. They only take photo's of subjects that are important to them as a person, or what they think people should see. They are only content with the image if it illustrates what they think the subject matter should look like. Images that exist in the takers own reality are shared with others that take from the images what they want to see. Each person uses their own experiences to understand what they see within the photograph.

"photographs alter and enlarge our notions of what is worth looking at and what we have a right to observe"

You can't understand anything from a photograph because the images themselves are biased. Paintings aren't seen as literal representations of reality, but as artistic impressions of the world around the artist. Photography is usually seen as being a truthful account of what is within the image. However no matter how objective the photographer tries to be the image will still portray their impression and feelings about the subject matter. They are only people and no matter how unprejudiced they try to be the images they make are only their interpretation of what they are recording.

When a photographer makes images they force there ideas on to a subject matter. They show what they believe about a certain subject, and what they think it looks like. Everyone has their own opinions about what the world looks like. Yet no two people are the same, so everyone has there own ideas about what their reality is like, or should be like. Each world gets a little bigger when someone goes somewhere new. Photographs tell people what the photographers reality looks like, which gives them a false account of the world around us.

" the precise expression on the subject's face that supported their own notions about poverty, light, dignity, texture, exploitation, and geometry."

Photographers flatten the world through a camera lens and onto a piece of paper. The statue of liberty can now fit into your pocket. Seeing the statue on a piece of paper isn't the same as seeing it for your self. It can't replace the whole experience which ands to the viewers understanding of what the statue is like, and yet after seeing the photograph you believe you know what Miss Liberty looks like. The image is what the camera recorded, the photographers interpretation of how the statue of liberty should be seen.

"the work the photographers does is no generic exception to the usually shady commerce between art and truth"

In this way a photo tells us no more then a painting would. An'experience captured‘, which is unique to the taker. Weather it be an artist or a photographer. Both choose a composition that they want to keep.

When it comes to taking images the image maker is in complete control. You see what the maker wants you to see, and you believe it. Photos give the impression of the truth but these'miniatures of reality' are what the photographer wants you to see. It gives you a false sense of reality. No matter how detached a photographer is that person is still human. The images they make still capture the world as they see it, or want to see it. Then their images are collected and bound together. An entire world within two end pages.

"to collect photographs is to collect the world"

Today reality is what we see on a TV screen. If a war doesn't appear on the 6 o'clock new it doesn't exist. What is mass media if not photographs. A film is nothing more then a flood of photos? People today only realize what is shown to them, their reality is only what they see of it on a television screen or on the walls of a gallery.

A family album is no better then a television set. Photos of our former selves and of distant relative is our way of cheating death. Although family member might be gone there images remain in tact. It gives us a misleading sense of immortality. As long as the photo exists that person won't be forgotten. However, an image can't tell you what a person smelt like, or whether they had a sense of humour. It only can show you a moment in there life, from the photographers point of view. A photo can't capture a persons personality. People are to complex to be summarised within an image.

Another kind of photo in a family album is the travel snapshots. Proof that certain people were in fact where they said they were, and apparently have a good time. Nowadays such photos can be made while you check your email, but these images still have importance. They are proof of the family unit, that these people can function together and want to be in each others company. The image taker doesn't take photos of the bad parts of the vacation, only the sunny days when the kids aren't tarring each others hair out. Images of the slums never appear in this album, only the photographs that the photographer wants to remember, the moments that the person want to remain in there reality.

Sontag implies that photography, like all art forms is an interpretation of space, time, and light. However, since people think photos are mirrors of the world they believe what they see.

"the most grandiose result of the photographic enterprise is to give us the sense that we can hold the world in our heads- as an anthology of images."

Photographers, like artists, show images from there own realities. They share their opinion from their experiences as human beings. An interpretation is all anyone can give. Therefore the information that you get from an image is tainted. Their ideas will be mirrored in their images, showing the chosen subject matter as they think it should be seen. They compose the image so the viewer can see what the photographer wants them to see. They can't see outside the box or down the street.
