The ideas of John Stuart Mill, explored in On Liberty, give much legitimization to the revolutions of 1848 in Europe. Mill describes human liberty as rooted in free thought and pursuits. For Mill, the individual is the locus of rights because the individual is the sovereign who can decide his/her own subjective appeal to freedom or rights. Personal opinion valued over the majority is another concept that Mill proposes. This advanced form of thinking allows individuals to take hold of their own political affairs and defines what an ideal politics ought to be because governmental coercion destroys the possibility of an individual appeal to liberty.

Mill's ideas of liberty rooted in individuality are almost necessary for any theoretical background for the 1848 revolution during June. Alexis de Tocqueville, in the June Days, describes the insurrectionists as engaging in a political struggle against the coercive power of the French state. He compares it to a slave uprising, much in the same way that Mill describes the individual's appeal to liberty. Tocqueville gives a glimpse into the way in which the revolutions of 1848 spread and why they failed in the end. Due to the radical character and the lack of a middle class support, Tocqueville proposes, the revolutionary insurrectionists' goal was impossible from the start.

Other liberal ideas are embodied in Guiseppe Mazzini's oath in Young Italy. While not an appeal to further individualistic ideals of liberty, Mazzini's oath offers hope for a nationalistic youth and a unified Italy. He gives conception of an Italy that could be rid of hatred and full love. However, there is a catch to his glorious promise. The chance for him to initiate violence in the form of insurrection and education demands the form of uprisings that the revolutions of 1848 brought forth.

While liberal ideas were embodied in France and not in Italy, in Germany the idea of nationalism superseded the ideal individualism postulated by Mill. Carl Schurz identifies how he felt during the time when Louis Philippe had proclaimed a Republic in France. The possibility of a German nation and the spread of revolution to Germany made him excited. Schurz describes how he felt when the German tricolor was once again raised and the prospect of a volksgeist once again rose in the minds of his peers and neighbors

ʑIn 14 in Rwanda, in eastern Africa, there was an extremely effective genocid.campaign in which the Hutu-Power majority practically exterminated the minority Tuts.population. What is even more disturbing is how the rest of the world decided to ignore this fac.and take little to no action to stop it, even though doing so directly violated the UN Genocid.Help with essay on Book Review of We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will Be Killed With Our Families, The Genocide in Rwanda

Convention. The events of 14, are the subject of Phillip Gourevitch's book, We Wish t.Inform You That Tomorrow We Will Be Killed With Our Families. Gourevitch explains i.detail the roots of the Hutu-Tutsi conflict, the events that led up to the genocide, the participatio.of foreign countries who aided the murderers and those that tried to oppose them, and of cours.the gruesome event and its aftermath. He gives an objective account of history throughout mos.of the book, but at certain points allows his personal opinions to shine through. He argues tha.the Rwandese Patriotic Front (RPF), that assumed control of the government after quelling th.genocide later that year, was a well-organized regime that truly wanted to do good, but, lik.almost all governments, had its flaws. He also claims that the campaign to slaughter Tutsis wen.into full effect after the death of Hutu-Power leader, Habyarimana, with the help of radio an.newspaper propaganda. Finally, Gourevitch cites the remarkable ability of the United States an.other European countries to overlook the crisis in Rwanda.

The last point that Gourevitch argues is a remarkable one. How could these countries.which had signed a convention stating their commitment to preventing genocide after the fall o.Nazisim in Europe, allow such events to take place? Especially taking into account World Wa.II, where these countries fought to end genocide, hesitancy to do the same in Rwanda suggest.something unsettling. In 14 Tutsis were being killed by family, doctors, teachers, neighbor.and friends, mostly by machete and at a rate three times the rate of killing during the Holocaust..Yet, the Clinton administration was reluctant to call the atrocities genocide until after the damag.had been done. After the fact, of course, both President Clinton and Secretary of State Madelin.Albright issued apologetic statements acknowledging the fact that something horrible had reall.occurred in Rwanda. I can not fathom how our nation and so many others could stand idly by a.so many innocent people were slaughtered.

Secondly, Gourevitch describes the atmosphere in which the anti-Tutsi attitude was abl.to brew. Hutus and Tutsis had been living together for hundreds of years in relative peace. Hutu.were farmers and Tutsis were herders and often considered the upper echelon of society. Th.author often refers to what he calls the, "Hamitic myth," which states that the Tutsis were th.higher class because they were really descendants from King David of Abyssinia. The myt.proposes that you can tell a Hutu from a Tutsi because physically the Tutsis have features tha.resemble whites, such as a tall, thin frame, and a narrower nose. Gourevitch explains thes.differences but primarily argues that when Hutu-Power took over the post-colonial government.the animosity towards Tutsis began to heat up.

One leader in particular, Major General Habyarimana, is discussed throughout the book..When the ruler first came to power, things almost looked positive. He called for an end to Hut.attacks on Tutsis, saying that the two ethnic groups should learn to live together in peace. H.also boosted the country's economy in the early years. However, as time went on, the Presiden.would back away from this statement, producing propaganda that included a popular newspape.that featured articles such as the "Hutu Ten Commandments" where the reader is advised to hav."unity and solidarity" against the "common Tutsi enemy." Gourevitch also refers t.Habyarimana's wife, Madame Agathe, and her circle of advisors, the akazu, as cultivating th.anti-Tutsi sentiment in the Rwandan people.

When Habyarimana was assassinated, however, the war swung into full effect. The akaz.were quick to rally the masses and Tutsi slaughter was soon underway. The interhamwe, a.unofficial army, set up roadblocks and Tutsis were confined to their homes. In less than a yea.the government was successful in killing over 800,000 Tutsis, literally decimating the population..Some Hutus were resistant to the government order for murder, but many were participants, "Jus.following orders." The ingenuity of the genocide was that there was no prominent leader, whic.made seeking justice in the aftermath incredibly challenging. When the RPF took control late.that year, the prison system was jam-packed with men, women, and children accused o.participating in the genocide. This overcrowding occurred despite the fact that a majority of th.genocidaires had fled to refugee camps in Zaire when the RPF came into power.

When discussing the RPF Gourevitch mostly refers to conversations he had with Vic.President, and head of the army, General Kagame. The burden of picking up the pieces after suc.an event is not one to envy. The RPF faced the challenges of bringing the genocidaires t.justice, providing housing for returning refugees, organizing a new government including bot.Hutus and Tutsis, and finding the interhamwe and top genocidaires who had fled to refuge.camps in Uganda and Zaire. Aside from a mission gone awry in Kibeho, where ,000 Hutu.were killed by a combination of the RPF, stampedes, and the interhamwe, most attempts a.moving the refugees were successful and occurred non-violently. There was peace betwee.Hutus and Tutsis in the beginning, but when Gourevitch wraps up the book, he describes ho.Rwanda has once again erupted into rape, looting, and bloodshed. However, he hints that th.new regime has made some progress by sayin.

During their attack on the school in Gisenyi, as in the earlier attack on the school i.

Kibuye, the students, teenage girls who had been roused from their sleep, were ordered t.

separate themselves Hutus from Tutsis. But the students had refused. At both schools.

the girls said they were simply Rwandans, so they were beaten and shot indiscriminately.Although it is a morose example, it proves that progress is being made, at least in the open mind.of some young Rwandans. The author also cites the respect the RPF has earned from man.foreign critics. Mostly, this reverence is due to the army's organization, and its denunciation o.murder and looting, which were commonplace with the old government. Overall, in spite of th.catastrophic events of 14, the author seems to see a ray of hope for the people of Rwanda, an.I wholeheartedly wish he's correct.

We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will Be Killed With Our Families, was th.first in-depth information I had encountered on the Rwandan crisis of 14 and I was completel.shocked. I believe the position many Western nations took with regards to Rwanda was nothin.short of blatant racism, especially considering the action taken to stop ethnic cleansing in th.Balkans around the same time. During the extermination of Tutsis the Clinton administratio.was reluctant to call the events genocide. When asked why the incidents were not bein.considered genocide a spokeswoman for the State Department said, "there are obligations whic.arise in connection with the use of the term." In this instance, she was referring to the Genocid.Convention, which the US had signed. After the fact, when the burden of intervening wa.conveniently lifted, Clinton referred to the killings in Rwanda by saying, "It is important that th.world know that these killings were not spontaneous or accidental... they were most certainly no.the result of ancient tribal struggles... These events grew from a policy aimed at the systemati.destruction of a people." The French even had the tenacity to support the Hutu-Power leaders.and while claiming to be neutral peace-keeping forces, they actually harbored many of the mos.prominent genocidaires.

I also shared Gourevitch's feelings of disgust with the UN peacekeeping action..UNAMIR was sent into Rwanda to prevent the slaughter of Tutsis and they were completel.unsuccessful. In fact, they did absolutely nothing, even when they were given the opportunity..For example, General Romeo Dallaire, head of UNAMIR, received information that Tutsis wer.being registered for the purpose of extermination, and that a major weapons cache existed in th.capital of Kigali. In this instance, the UN forces had the opportunity to prevent mass killings, ye.they decided not to take any action.

Finally, I agreed with the author's opinion that the RPF was an improvement from th.bloodthirsty former Hutu-Power government. From the evidence presented, I thought the.appeared to be taking steps towards rebuilding the state, slowly but surely.

I enjoyed reading We Wish to Inform You... Gourevitch writes in an easy to read style.incorporating the tragic stories of survivors with a detailed history of the events. By combining.personal elements with non-fiction information, the book reads almost like a novel. He als.provides the whole story; prior to 14, during the massacres, and the aftermath. His coverag.did not end in Rwanda, but also explored the refugee crisis in Zaire, attacks on Tutsis in Nort.Kivu, and Rwanda's role in ousting Zairean dictator, Mobutu Sese Seko, and creating th.Democratic Republic of the Congo. The book presented a great deal of information o.fascinating events, and most of his opinions were supported with astonishing evidence. Th.book was truly unforgettable. .

According to the 000 US census, 54 million households (about 51 percent of households in the US) have one or more computers in the home as of August 000. Some people claim that a computer is just a tool that people use to get work done. On the other hand, some people think the computer has become more than just a "tool" because it allows us to communicate more efficiently, entertain, and be more productive. The computer has become a big part of everyday life to millions of people in modern society. Although computers have improved communication, productivity and convenience, they have also made society weak and vulnerable because they take over some of our most valuable abilities such as literary and social skills. Society has also become too dependent on computers, for instance we rely too heavily on digital data which can easily be destroyed or stolen. With the steady increase of computer use, society will become more dependent in years to come..Email is one of the most important services that are used on the computer. In August 001, Gallup Poll reported "more than nine in 10 [people who own a computer] indicate that Email (7%) and the net (6%) have made their lives better". Email is so popular because of the speed of the transfer and how is easy it is to use. On the other hand, Email has made people very clumsy in their writing. Society has used Email like a notepad, grammar and spelling are thrown out the window. People could now write to each other casually in the workplace. Because Email is so easy to write and used so casually, both in the workplace and at home, it has become abused. Professor Christina Cavanagh at University of Western Ontario researched Email use in the workplace, she concludes tha.Email is failing as a productivity tool in the workplace… people enjoy the convenience of sending relevant information quickly and easily, but this is far overshadowed by the volumes of low-value Emails received each day"..In some circumstances, such as the workplace, Email is too convenient. There are many Emails full of grammar errors that are transferred through the corporate network. If the same information were done on a formally written memorandum, there would be a lot more attention to spelling and grammar than on a convenient Email message. Email has become more than just a convenient way to communicate; it has become a casual and sloppy tool that breaks down our literary skills.

The social implication of Email has drastically affected society. Many people use Email as a way to hide behind a computer when communicating. People would type what they thought to someone, but would never say it in front of them. Antisocial individuals are notorious for using chat rooms as their way to communicate with people. Because of Email people will rarely need to make person-to-person conversation. Email and the Internet allow people to communicate with each other. To accomplish any sort of retrieval of information from the Internet the local computer must connect to another computer that is serving information. This type of computer is called a server. There are many different kinds of servers; Email, file, and web servers are the most common. People serf the web and look up information within seconds by using these servers that are all around the world. Today the Internet is used for everything from looking up the weather to trading stocks. However, it is sometimes hard to decipher true facts and statistics from incorrect ones. Therefore, the Internet is not always the best source for information. Society is drawn to the Internet because it is so easily accessible, but most correct and well documented information is available at any library. The Internet allows easy access to information, and because of this we have become over dependent on it..The Internet is a place to exchange information, play games, and socialize. There are also risks that are involved in using the Internet, hackers, viruses, and worms can wreak havoc on your computer. When a virus interrupts a computer system, the users expensive computer becomes nothing more then a paperweight. According to Jan Hruska, a writer for an antivirus software company, "the number of known viruses surpassed 70,000 in January 00". Viruses have become a nuisance throughout the Internet and have cost US companies billions of dollars. Polly Raymond, a writer at silicon.com stated that the "Melissa virus caused $1 billion worth of damage". Viruses could easily have backdoors built in, which allow hackers to steal or destroy important information. The Internet has both advantages and disadvantages, but the Internet is far too insecure and unprotected to have society depend on it as it currently does. If a bank was broken into as many times as a website, the bank would go out of business, yet people still use their credit card to purchase products and trade stocks many times every day..Like the Internet, games are extremely popular among teens. Computer games are fun, relaxing, sometimes educational. Although games are entertaining some studies have shown that some games have caused kids to develop social problems. Violent computer games, for instance, have a big impact in the development of children. Bryan Leech described the condition bes."[Computer Games] have an interactive nature that helps to desensitize the juvenile attitude to violence. The youngster can take actions and bring about a death, with blood spraying everywhere. In contrast, reading a book or watching a movie is a passive experience, in which the child can do nothing to alter the outcome".Violent games teach kids at a young age that violence is okay and it probably has caused considerable rise in the number of violent acts among teens. Computer games also have a tendency for kids to become antisocial. Online role-playing games are a favorite of antisocial individuals; unfortunately it is known that they will become addicted. Because of these kind of games people would rather stay inside and meet people on the game instead of meeting people in the real world. Computer games most definitely have a social influence on developing minds. There are also many computers that are used in airplanes which are used for navigation and weaponry. Computers that are used in airplanes need to be precise and reliable. The military spends millions of dollars on development and construction of computers that pilots depend on every time they fly. The dependency on computers in the aeronautics industry is far greater than the ones for consumers because there are many lives at risk. Everyday pilots all over the world depend on computers to get their planes from point A to point B safely. The pilot becomes very dependent on these systems when visibility becomes very minimal. A great example of computers taking a big part in aircraft control is the "fog buster" which Alaska Airlines uses. The fog buster system, also known as Head-up Guidance System, improves safety by minimizing the times the pilot has to look down at the cockpit and then look up. The system also has a see through visor that is called a combiner that the pilot puts on. The pilot is dependent on these instruments with their lives and the lives of the other passengers on board. Pilots however may become too dependent on these types of computer instruments. According to a Chilean newspaper, a Siberian passenger jet crashed because of an earthquake that disrupted the autopilot controls which caused it to nose dive. Relying on automated systems can be convenient but also lead to disaster..An example of societies dependence on computers occurred in the late 10s when it was announce that there is a bug in many hardware-coded clocks that would make the year 000 equivalent to 100. People were afraid that this would be the end of humanity because the computers would'run amuck'. Society was scared that their computers would not work tomorrow, that planes would fall from the sky, money will not be worth a dime because of stalled transactions. Computers are more a part of today's society than everyone thought. Computers are tied into finances, travel and communication and because of this we have become too dependent on a computer that can easily be broken..Computers have become a big part of society because it allows us to efficiently communicate and be more productive. However, because of computers' immense abilities we use it to run our modern society and if the computer system fails everyday life will be disrupted. We as a society have become overly dependent on computers to do very important tasks. Computers make it easier to communicate and socialize, but it also makes society a lot less interactive. "She had dark abundant hair, so glossy that it threw off the sunshine with a gleam" (51). From the very beginning of the novel The Scarlet Letter, the author, Nathaniel Hawthorne, uses sunshine to describe Hester Prynne. This quote implies that the sun is still shining on Hester, yet as the novel goes on the sunshine begins to hide from Hester. This first quote is one of the few that uses sunshine to portray Hester in a good way. Nathaniel Hawthorne refers to sunshine a number of times in his novel and he uses it to symbolize many things.

When Hester is standing on the scaffold sunshine is always associated with shame. "…with the hot midday sun burning down on her face and lighting up its shame…"(61). This allows the reader to know that Hester is ashamed of what she did. Even if she feels that she is not completely wrong she is embarrassed about the crime she committed. One of the townspeople, the "grim beadle" (5) says "A blessing on the righteous Colony of the Massachusetts , where iniquity is dragged out into the sunshine!" (5). Hester is standing on the scaffold in broad daylight where everyone can see her. They can see her, the scarlet letter, and her baby. With all the sunlight there is no way that a townsperson could overlook her sin.

Coastal Protectio.Hard Engineerin.Sea Walls - These are used to offer protection to property on the cliff top in the short term. Sea walls are very effective at stopping erosion in a small area. As the waves hit the wall they are reflected. Erosion continues at the unprotected areas.Groynes - Groynes are very inexpensive and are used to act as a'catchment' for sediment. Sediment builds due to the groyne working with the natural process of longshore drift to attract sediment. Because of this, sandy beaches create an effective defence against marine erosion. However, because of the reduction of longshore drift, erosion rates may be higher else where.

Write my Essay on Coastal Protection for me

Revetments - Revetments are relatively cheap and they reduce the energy of the waves so the cliff foot is not effected by marine erosion. Although very useful against erosion, revetments reduce the recreational value of the beach.Gabions - This uses small rocks in a mesh cage. The rocks are used to absorb the waves energy before they create an impact on the cliff foot. Gabions are not good for recreational purposes due to the mesh if it breaks.Soft Engineerin.Beach nourishment - This is used to replenish the beach sediment which may have been lost by longshore drift. Beach nourishment is effective for recreational purposes but it can have a very short life span considering that one storm can remove a huge amount of beach material.Cliff drainage - This involves draining the cliff of any rain water it has saturated. This benefit's the land because the saturated cliff can become unstable due to the amount of weight it has gained.Zonin.This is used when the local government believes it would be better for the coast to remain unprotected and place restrictions on people building near the coast. This'managed retreat' is used when it is cheaper to allow buildings to fall into the sea rather then protecting it. Buildings which lie in this hazardous are brought by the government and then left to fall in the sea..

Alamo Soldier is the true story of Napoleon Bonapart Mitchell a 17 year old man from Tennessee. Peolpe called him Peaceful Mitchell because he didnt like his name. Just Before he left Washington-On-The-Brazos he met Alice Price and took her to church. He went to San Antoniothe next morning. Peaceful was not the only one at the Alamo that did not want to kill someone but he was one of the few. He hoped that after he got shot at he wouldnt have any trouble shooting back. Peaceful told Little Joe Bayless that he thought that he had just come to the Alamo to die because he didnt want to shoot anybody. Peaceful was asigned to the wooden paliside beside Davy Crockett and thats where he died.

I really enjoyed reading this book It was well worth my time, and i am glad i read it. I like reading books about the history of Texas and the Alamo. It was real interesting to learn that some people didnt want to kill people, and that some people had family on Santa Annas side. I would recomend that anybody that likes books that are funny and serious at the same time read this book because it is a good mix between the two. My favorite part of the book was when Johnny Hays found the Summers girl hidden out in the chicken coop and he wouldnt let go of her hand and her little brother shot his left ear off. This was a really good book..
