The unfair treatment of those with Physical Deformities is an ongoing theme in our society. In the book Frankenstein by Mary Shelley this theme is evident throughout the entire plot. This theme is also apparent in the world today, and affects the lives of many people who can't change their condition. Victor Frankenstein's creation is abused, shot at, and ostracized by everyone he comes in contact with.

In the story, the main character Victor Frankenstein goes to a school in Ingolstadt in hopes of expanding his already passionate amazement with science and nature. He decides to create a creature out of dead parts and give it life. In his opinion this creation will be marveled at by many as the greatest scientific achievement of all-time. Suddenly, everything goes wrong and Victor is horrified of what he has created and leaves the creature to go on its own. The creature's first encounter with someone other than Victor is short but makes a point, he stubbles into a hut with an old man inside who shrieks with fear running away swiftly. After this experience, he continues into the small village nearby. As he walks through the village everyone who catches site of him runs with fear and horror. The creature decides that staying away from humans would be his best bet and settles down into a small shed for the night. To his surprise in the morning he discovers that he has a small crack in which he can peer into the cottage nearby. He learns many things from the people inside and eventually tries to show himself but the people who live there are once again frightened at his looks and shoo him away. He then finds a girl drowning in the river and saves her but the man accompanying her think he tried to drown her and shoots him. All of these incidents are examples of how the theme of unjust treatment of those with Physical Deformities.

This theme is the more significant because of how it affects many of the characters in the story. William, Victor's brother is killed by the monster only because of the rage caused by how the monster was treated by others. This then leads to the execution of Justine who is blamed for Williams's murder. The only character who learns anything from this theme is the victim himself. He notices that people judge him differently and that he will never be accepted, so he goes to his creator to ask that he create him a female companion, in the end that project fails.

In today's world this theme is apparent all over. All over people with deformities are looked as freaks and stared at by even the littlest child. People in today's world don't know how to react to someone with an irregularity. A kid in my grade has no arms and legs; and is bound to a wheelchair. On first sight I people are amazed and shocked by him, when really he is a very nice cool guy. In an even more extreme, people with more physical such as missing eyes or certain syndromes which can cause gigantism or dwarfism are even more looked upon and unnatural in today's world by many people. This parallels the story and how the monster is look at as being grotesque by others because of his physical misshapenness, just as people now a days look at people with deformities as abnormal.

This widespread theme of the unfair treatment of those with Physical Deformities is apparent both in today's world and in the book Frankenstein. The monster in the book and certain people today are both looked at differently because of their physical conditions and how look compared to others.
