A Buzzing Ea.One summer's evening as I was relaxing on my front porch enjoying the fresh air, I noticed a buzzing noise around my head. It appeared that a moth was trying to find shelter from the bright light that was above me. All of sudden the bug found its way into my ear canal..I frantically pulled and tugged trying to draw the bug out of my ear, but all my attempts failed. The bug kept flapping its wings trying to make its way out, but my earwax had it trapped. I knew then, it was time to call on my mother for help. My mother quickly called the hospital for advice. The nurse explained that shining a flashlight into my ear canal might entice the bug to come out because flying insects usually travel toward the light. My mother did exactly as the nurse had explained. We waited patiently for the bug to come out of my ear but nothing happened.

My mother and I both decided it was time to seek the expertise we needed to get the bug out of my ear as soon as possible. We then traveled to the Pinckneyville Community Hospital where we had to wait on the doctor to arrive. As soon as the doctor saw me, he made an unpleasant joke about my situation. For example, I previously saw him with in the past year twice for a broken finger and a dislocated finger. He said as soon as he walked in the emergency room where I was he said, "what's wrong now, a broken finger."

Then Dr. Fozard, my family doctor tried his best to remove the bug, but failed. In the past Dr. Fozard was very good at fixing stuff and telling you what is wrong with you, but this time it wouldn't happened. He used extended tweezers and searched the deepest part of my ear. All he could come up with was a lousy, little wing. He also tried using a water pick to flush the moth from my ear. I was beginning to think that the bug was going to be a permanent part of my life. When he said that he was not going to be able to eradicate the insect out of my ear I began to panic and ask all sorts of questions. I guess because I was nervous. It was the kind of "nervous" that your hands have this could sweat to them. He then referred me to an ear, nose and throat specialist. Thoughts of surgery were flashing through my mind, and I could picture myself lying on the operating table. My head all split open from trying to get the bug out of my ear. My head all bandaged up from surgery, I would never be right. I was starting to really detest that tiny pest that flew in my ear.

By the time I had went to bed that night, the moth had finally died. I could not hear any more fluttering or feel any movement from the moth. I made sure that I slept with my ear to the pillow, so that the bug could not proceed further into my ear canal. I tried to forget that the insect was in my ear, but it was really difficult to do.

On the way to the specialist the next day, I was very nervous. My hands were sweating again, I was getting cold chills, and I was just sweating all over. I kept thinking about all the terrible things that could happen to me. For example, never being able to hear again, just the fact that I got a bug in my ear was bad enough. After I got to the clinic, the nurse showed me into the doctor's office. The doctor was very reassuring and said, "that this was not the first bug that he had removed and that he has got all of them out in the past." He used the longest, thinnest pair of tweezers that I had ever seen to extract the moth. They look like they could reach all the way to China. As the tweezers were going into my ear, it felt so weird. You could actually feel ho far the bug was in there. It was terrible. I was so happy to be rid of the little insect. After this experience, I was careful about sitting on the porch at night..
