Part B Essay Question.

Resistance training is an acceptable method of developing strength in children. When choosing a training method for children it is always best to centre the exercises around using the individuals own body weight. A number of issues must first be addressed before beginning training, these include Injury to growth plates, appropriate warm ups/downs, medical conditions, size and age of the child, and physical, mental, and social health.

Resistance training in children can be very beneficial if done properly (that is, taught the correct methods) and under the supervision of a qualified adult. Children are equally, if not more trainable in a sense (e.g. % improvements) than adolescents and young adults. Strength gains are very possible in pre-adolescents, but it seems they are less trainable in terms of absolute strength. Before any resistance training occurs children should always be examined and declared fit by a physician. It is best to encourage resistance training as only one of a variety of normal recreational and sport activities, and always vary the training body weight, free weights, machines and springs. Children that are participating in resistance training must be mature enough to accept instruction and coaching.

Intensity appears to be the critical factor in determining strength gains in preadolescents. The optimal loading parameter in terms of repetitions, sets and training sessions per week are yet to be determined and should be centered on the child's body weight, age, height, maturity, strength. Strength gains during preadolescents can be attributed primarily to improvements in neuromuscular activation and motor coordination, not hypertrophy. Achieving strength gains and keeping them cannot be achieved on the basis of one high intensity training session per week. To achieve best results, without over-exertion, two to three sessions of less than 0mins with one to three sets of each exercise per week is the optimal amount of training for preadolescents. Short term resistance training does not interfere with the normal development of cardio respiratory fitness during preadolescents, and can even provide a positive stimulus under specific conditions.

It is essential to include thorough warm up and cool down periods, including stretching whenever any resistance training is being done with preadolescents. The loading is always based on the child's own capacity and follows a progression throughout the program. Always avoid extremely high intensity efforts, such a maximal or near-maximal lifts with free weights of machines. Children must be capable of doing 6-8 reps of each exercise, if not the load is too heavy. Emphasis on technique always takes precedence over number of reps achieved and weights lifted, stop exercises when the quality of technical execution begins to break down. Attention must be paid to proper alignment of body segments during exercise. Always discourage competition between preadolescents, helping them to focus on personal improvement.

Although body composition of children (body fat and lean body mass) is not effected by resistance training, the risk of musculoskeletal injury cannot be ruled out. The risk is low when training under competently supervised conditions especially when competition among children is prohibited. Avoid eccentric training involving isolated muscles, try to encourage dynamic concentric contractions as they are more beneficial to children. A direct relationship between improved sports performance and strength gains made as a result of training in preadolescents is still yet to be acknowledged. However, there is a clear increase in motor fitness from resistance training in preadolescents. Circuit training with low to moderate resistance should be considered as a means of introducing children to correct technique, and to capitalize on possible cardio respiratory benefits. Balance should be achieved between upper and lower body development and between agonistic and antagonistic muscles when performing resistance training. If using weight machines, only those machines that are designed for children should be used, or those where the loads are able to be easily adjusted for the reduced strength capacity and size of children.

Resistance training can play an important role in reducing the incidence and severity of injury in youth sport. It stimulates the appropriate biological mechanisms that strengthen the supporting structures (muscles, tendons, ligaments, and bones), enhance the ability of tissues to absorb more force prior to failure (tearing) and develop greater muscular balance about specific joints. The application of resistance training is by itself a physical stress. Factors such as fatigue, aggressiveness, experience, contact in the sport, practice time, and other social or environmental influences play a role in the prevention of injuries. These factors should always be considered in the over-all program of planning practices and physical training sessions.

Fractures can often occur from resistance training, particularly stress fractures and sited at the Epiphyses (growth plates). The accentuation of any of the spines curvatures can cause a lordosis or kyphosis in the spine. Scollitic spinal injuries (twisting of the spine) can be the result of imbalances in training programmes. Cartilage problems may occur with short-range repetitive movements or excessive loading during training. Ligament injuries are likely when the loads are excessive and joints taken beyond their normal range as a consequence. The mechanism of injury here can be indirect, i.e. not caused directly by the equipment but by the body's attempts to control the load.

The best exercises for developing strength in children involve lifting there own body weight. Resistance training is acceptable, as long as it is supervised and the correct technique is taught.

A late spring thunderstorm spawned at least three tornadoes, including two in Custer County, said Nicole Carton, a dispatcher with the Custer County sheriffs department.

Another tornado damaged two farm houses in Holt County in northeast Nebraska.

There were no reports of injuries from the Monday storm.

One tornado, nearly a half-mile wide, was reported by a firefighter just outside Comstock. Another was confirmed in the countryside about eight miles west of Sargent.

Severe Weather and Tornadoes Cause Damage Across the Midwest

May 18, 18 - The National Weather Service (NWS) reports severe weather, including several tornadoes, high winds and thunderstorms, moved across the Midwest this weekend. Iowa, Nebraska, North Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin all experienced various levels of storm damage. The hardest hit states were Iowa and Minnesota, where numerous tornadoes destroyed or damaged structures, downed trees and power lines and injured more than 100 people. Two fatalities were reported in Minnesota.

In Iowa, an unconfirmed number of tornadoes along with hurricane force winds moved through the state beginning Friday afternoon, causing damage in Kossuth, Washington, Montgomery, Harrison, Page, Ida, Shelby, Crawford, Pottawattamie, Webster, Audubon, Johnson and Cedar counties. The governor has declared Kossuth and Washington counties as state disaster areas.

Tornadoes and thunderstorms dropped large hail, downed trees and power lines and destroyed several structures in the affected counties. Hardest hit were Pottawattamie, Kossuth, Webster, Johnson, Shelby and Crawford counties. There are power outages and water shortages reported with full restoration of power expected by today.

Iowa county damage estimates are as follows

In Pottawattamie County, there were 1 injuries reported and an estimated $1,000,000 in property damage.

In Kossuth County, there were also 1 injuries reported, 78 power poles damaged, one nursing home destroyed, two homes destroyed and 10 homes rendered uninhabitable and water shortages.

Washington County has reported a nine-year-old girl missing. A tornado caused damage to a three-block area within the community.

Johnson County has five to six homes destroyed and up to 0 damaged. Up to 0 miles of power line poles were snapped off. Preliminary damage estimates indicate that there are several million dollars in damage to this county.

Shelby County is reporting the towns of Irwin and Elkhorn are without power.

Two Iowa Emergency Management Disaster Impact Teams were deployed to Washington County to assess the situation. The governor dispatched 0 National Guard members to the area to provide security and assistance with other needs. The American Red Cross (ARC) opened one shelter, though no people were housed. The ARC is providing food and water.

FEMAs Region VII office in Kansas City, Mo. is monitoring the situation and is in contact with Iowa officials.

In Minnesota, the same system moved through the area, bringing high winds and tornadoes, causing downed trees and power lines and damage to structures. The hardest hit counties were Anoka, Blue Earth, Carver, Hennepin, Ramsey and Stearns. There were two fatalities, one in Stearns County and one in Hennepin County, and numerous injuries in the affected counties. Damage estimates indicate more than 100 homes suffered some level of damage.

Minnesota officials activated their Emergency Operations Center (EOC). State recovery efforts have begun, including the clearing of debris and the restoration of power. Full restoration of power is expected sometime today.

FEMAs Region V office in Chicago is working with state officials and has begun Preliminary Damage Assessments (PDAs) in Anoka, Hennepin and Ramsey counties.

Elsewhere, severe weather affected Nebraska, Wisconsin and North Dakota. In Nebraska, no injuries were reported and damage assessments are being conducted at the county level. At least nine people were injured in Wisconsin after severe winds whipped through the state. Tornadoes were also reported in North Dakota in McHenry and Pierce counties, though no damage or injuries have been reported.

Damage seemed confined to downed power lines and trees near both communities.

John Springer, lead forecaster for the National Weather Service in North Platte, said the actual number of tornadoes from the storm could not be confirmed until field studies were conducted.

The large storm system had several storms cells embedded in it, said Cathy Zapotocny, a meteorologist with the weather service in Valley. That allowed tornadoes to be reported almost simultaneously 70 miles apart in Comstock and ONeill around 8 p.m.

Damage was not confined to those two counties.

High winds and hail knocked down trees and power lines in Cedar County, said Kevin Garvin, emergency management director.

Nearly inches of rain fell in about 0 minutes in parts of the county.

Softball-sized hail was reported about eight miles northwest of ONeill and also in St. Libory, about 10 miles north of Grand Island.

The storm may just be a preview of whats to come this week, Zapotocny said.

Tuesday may provide the only break from rain this week, with party cloudy skies and temperatures near 80.

Theres chance for rain again for Wednesday, and Thursday, and Friday and Saturday, she said.

Tornadoes Cause Damage in Arkansas...05/8/00

LEACHVILLE, Ark. (AP) -- Thunderstorms and tornadoes damaged homes and downed trees and power lines in northern Arkansas on Saturday, injuring at least one person. Five people died in traffic accidents.

A tornado touched down near Leachville, in the northeast corner of Arkansas, state police said. At least one person was injured, authorities said.

The heavy rain also prompted flood warnings and stranded several campers, canoeists and kayakers along the rapidly-flowing Buffalo National River. National Park Service employees rescued one kayaker from a tree at Ponca.

We had lots of people who have been stranded for short periods of time, said Searcy County Sheriff George Sutterfield.

A lightning strike broke a water main in rural Johnson County, resulting in a warning not to drink the water. The water system serves less than 500 customers.

In Searcy County, the flatbed of a tractor-trailer and a minivan collided in the rain on U.S. 65, killing three people. In Jackson County, two people died in a head-on crash as rain fell on U.S. 67, police said.

High winds felled about 100 trees, overturned several trailers and damaged other buildings near Southside in Independence County. No injuries were reported there.

Meanwhile in North Carolina, tens of thousands remained without electricity following storms Thursday.

Two people died in the aftermath Thursdays storms. One man fell from a ladder in Elon College on Thursday and died from his injuries. Another man in Burlington was killed Friday by a tree limb while he was cutting trees knocked down by the storms.

Duke Power Co. said 40,000 of its customers remained without power Saturday afternoon, with most of the outages in Greensboro and Burlington, which received the brunt of the storm. Carolina Power & Light reported 11,000 customers without power Saturday night. Power wasnt expected to be restored for most people until Sunday night.

If you were to go down the flight of stairs in the kitchen of my house, an uncertain, swinging light bulb would reveal through splintered and intermittent rays a dank basement cast in concrete and cinder block. As you descend the narrow, creaking wooden stairs spotted with chipping varnish, avoiding the low ceiling strangled by heat and plumbing pipes, you become aware of dimly-lit, almost primitive surroundings, reminiscent of an ancient, prehistoric cave. The floor is coated in dust and soot, the walls stained with a million once brilliant colors of paint, from crusades begun but never finished long ago.

When I was young, I loved this place. I would sit beneath the steps in the dark and look upon sights unseen, in the musty warmth of the boiler, taking in the cellar-smell all around me. All through my childhood it was refuge. My brothers would not seek me there because of the flight of stairs seemingly ready to break at every step, and the general gloom of the cellar which was too much for their delicate sensibilities.

However, when I had reached the philosophical age of fifteen, I began to draw a few less-than-encouraging conclusions from my love of this place. I remember seeing an ant in that cellar once. He was a real giant, black bulging body and antennae going like mad. He was a self-important little fellow, walking slowly but purposefully, with a kind of dignity. The ant continued its trek past me, oblivious to my presence, as though I were a hill, or a large tree, or perhaps the supermarket that he passed every day. It headed for a piece of dog biscuit near me which my dog had so obligingly left me earlier, and with some difficulty, loaded a small chunk on its broad, black back. It sauntered back into the darkness, then returned a few moments later for another piece, and another, and another.

I watched in a kind of fascination. This ant would live out its life in the confines of this cellar, in the dark, in obscurity, and none but I would know he existed at all. I pondered the injustice of this. I thought of my own fear of living my life in obscurity, of hard work, of carrying the load back and forth, back and forth, being perhaps a well-known little ant in my own circles, but not great enough to break through the veil of obscurity into public consciousness.

Insects and I do not generally get along, but I strangely felt no urge to crush this ant. I decided to let him live out his little ant-life in his private oblivion. As I returned to the first floor of my house, I thought of him. I would never see him again. If I did, I would have no way of knowing whether or not it was he or any of the other hundreds of thousands of slightly bigger than usual ants. I felt a strange, sad companionship with the little beast, and sat down to dinner, contemplative. When my parents questioned my unaccustomed silence, I merely shook my head, and remarked, "The unexamined life is not worth living." This gave my worthy parents some pause, but I did not think of them. I decided not to become an ant. I would henceforth live my life in relative daylight, if not in fame. I would not return to the basement. Except when my parents make me clean the floor.

The National Honor Society is the nations premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service. To be selected for induction into an organization of such excellence and high standard is not only an honor, but a privilledge.

There are numerous advantages in becoming a member of the National Honor Society. The best, in my opinion, is the recognition received for the years of hard work that my peers and I have contributed. Maintaining the high standards that got us recognize to become apart of the National Honor Society was not an easy task. High School today is filled with so many temptations, and the fact that we stood strong through all of them is an advantage within itself. We become apart of a group, not just any group, but a group consisting of our class's elite students. It's an honor to even be acknowledge as a canidate for such an outstanding group. National Honor Society also looks good on your college resume and other applications you might be filling out.

To my knowledge, there are no questionable problems are incidents that could be used to challenge my selection as an Honor Society member.

One of my favorite characteristics is my intelligence and intellect. I have the ability to quickly catch on to things, which is good for many reasons. Many people have told me my intelligence is a virtue. Intellect is also an important thing to posses. Being Class President and Flag Captain have put me in situations where my intellect, or my ability to apply reason and logic, had come in handy.

My least favorite characteristic is my outspokeness. I have a tendency to sometimes speak before I think, which is not a very desirable habit to possess. Outspokeness can be good in some situations, but if used the wrong way can turn out to be more bad than good. It's better to let your brain think, and not your mouth, because the impression you leave with people reflects on your actions and your choice of words. I have been working to improve this characteristic by simply taking the time to think before I speak.

Behavior is defined as the ability to conduct onself well. Students claiming membership in the Honor Society should always maintain high standard of behavior. They should be courteous to everyone, and respect others and themselves as well. They should have positive attitudes and postive behavior, and inspire others to do the same. They need to be able to work well with others, and be friendly. If selcted for induction, I will maintain this high standard of behavior. Behavior is a key factor to me, and even if Im not selected for induction, I will try to maintain the same high standard of behavior.

I fully understand retaining membership depends on the maintainance of the 6.5 grade point average. It is important to maintain good grades for scholarships and eligiblity reasons. This should not be a problem though, because good grades are a demand of myself, and my parents.

Becoming a member of the honor society would once again, be an honor and a privilledge. Being a canidate for selection into this group is an achievement within itself, and induction would be an outstanding achievement.

Five Observations from Missouri River Field Trip

¨In the middle of the Missouri River stood an old support of some type for a pipeline. At first glance, it appeared to be a feeble attempt at building a bridge, but after further inspection and information from our instructor, the concrete columns topped with a big mason rectangle turned out to be part of an old pipeline system. This area of the river was surrounded by sandbars and appeared to be very shallow. Along this part of the river grew many deciduous trees, growing in batches which were scattered throughout. The pipeline marked an area of the river which looked similar to when it did when Lewis and Clark explored the area, lacking the channeling for transportation of goods.

¨At the last stop of the tour, there was an enormous cliff-side facing the river. Different layers were apparent, and there was no evidence of man-originated excavation of rock to make way for the road. The gray, slate-like rock was very soft, broke easily and had several layers. Much of it had fallen, making the journey up the hill to the base of it, dangerous. On top of it was a harder rock, also with many layers though. It was yellow and whitish in color, with suspended birds nests. On top of that was the dirt layer, all towering to an approximate 0+ feet.

¨ As I was walking south along the river, I noticed this cottonwood tree growing over a rock base. The root system was semi-exposed with one half of it overhanging on the southeast side. The tree made a 60% angle with horizontal and had many dead branches, suggesting that a possible disease was present. It appears that, as time takes it toll, this tree will soon plop over across the road, wetting its fingertips in the mighty Missouri.

¨In the river itself, just off shore, floated an old rotting dock. This three piece dock was supported by pontoon-like aluminum devices, giving excellent support. The total length was approximately 0 feet and it was about 4 feet wide. A wire line kept it on shore. It was held together by joints, suggesting that it was collapsible and portable.

¨South of the dock, and east of the cottonwood, in the grasses just off shore, grew a an elaborate array of wildflowers. These brightened up the shadows cast over the area by the monstrosity of the towering cliffs nearby. Light reflected off the vibrant colors of the flowers, illuminating passers-by. There they grew, like peas in a pod, of different sizes and shapes and hues. It looked as if a box of Crayola Crayons threw up. Being the expert in pollen that I am, I was unfortunately unable to identify the species.

In the autumn of 14 Oskar Schindler lives in Krakow.

His wife, Emilie, lives in his home tows of Zwittau in Moravia. He's on his way to a party with commandant Amon Goeth who is in charge of the forced labour camp at Plaszow. In this camp there are 0.000 Jews, Poles and Gypsies. For some Germans at the party Schindler has brought gifts because he may need their support later on. On his way out he talks to the Jewish kitchen maid. She's treated badly and gives him money so that he can do something for her sister if she's put on a transport.

After the German occupation of Sudetenland he quickly becomes disillusioned with National Socialism. He is offered a job in Admiral Canaris' Abwehr Intelligence and is asked to gather information in Poland.

In October 1 he tries to set up a business in Krakow. Itzhak Stern, a Jewish bookkeeper, informs him about Rekord, an enamel factory. Schindler wants to get the factory running by Jews.

Schindler warns Stern against a raid on the Jewish ghetto. Synagogues are destroyed and on the eve of the Sabbath many of the worshippers are killed.

By the end of 140 Schindler's factory is employing 50 men, 150 of them are Jews. For Jews it is essential to have jobs that demand skilled labour in order to escape transportation to concentration camps. The SS often details Jewish workers to shovel snow, which harms production, but Schindler can do nothing about it. Many Jews apply for a job at Schindler's factory.

On March rd, 140 an edict is issued that the Jews of Krakow have to move into the ghetto.

On Schindler's birthday he receives kisses from Jewish girls. He is arrested and fortunately he is released after five days thanks to his contacts.

When some of his workers are missing Schindler finds out that they have been put on transport to a place with a new crematorium. Schindler gets his men off the train by representing himself as'General Schindler', the man in command of army supplies.

One day Schindler sees the SS rounding up Jews and shooting those who try to hide. This scene opens his eyes even further. He remarks that'Beyond this day no thinking person could fail to see what would happen.'. He resolves to do everything in his power to defeat the system and rescue as many Jews as possible.

An escaped Jew tells the full truth about the gas chambers. Further Schindler finds out that Jewish jewellers have to sort out gold and silver for the SS from dead Jews, some gold teeth are still covered in blood. These facts are believed and Jewish resistance becomes better organised and more successful. Schindler is not believed when he visits Budapest and tells all he knows about the extermination camps.

Back in Krakow there is a raid in the ghetto. Doctors at the hospital hand over cyanide to very sick patients because they know that there is no chance of escaping for them.

Schindler succeeds building an own labour camp for Jewish in Plaszow in order to give them better food and treatment, because at their first labour-camp food was sold on the black market by a German officer.

Many prisoners beg for a job at Schindler's factory and he does as much as he can, rescuing many Jews. Schindler sees to it that the prisoners get enough food and replenishes everything what is stolen from the regular quotas by the SS commandant. Not even a single SS guard is allowed to enter the camp. Bribing SS soldiers with liquor to rescue the lives of his prisoners is becoming normal. Schindler is spending like a compulsive gambler and the prisoners know that he would ruin himself if he continues spending like this.

In 144 the status of Plaszow is changed. Schindler sends gifts to the new bureaucrats in the higher SS echelon to keep the new situation just like that.

On Schindler's birthday the advance of the Russian armies has stopped and the SS is cleaning up traces for the Russians, camps in the east had to be vacated and in Plaszow the SS started burning bodies. In the meantime there has been an attempt on Hitler's life.

The Plaszow concentration camp is vacated and Schindler sends his own prisoners back to Plaszow to await relocation. Schindler wants to set up a new factory in Moravia because his factory is closed. He may take a number of prisoners with him and starts compiling a list with names of his Jewish on it. The German protest-letters do not get past Schindler's friend in Berlin and Schindler gets no resistance while building his new factory and camp in Brinnlitz, near his hometown in Zwittau.

The train with 00 Jewish women on it reaches the concentration camp instead of Brinnlitz and the transport of the women goes via Auschwitz where they receive hardly any food at all.

In the meantime Schindler has had to pay for his new camp himself and he doesn't expect to be able to start production again.

The Russians discovered drums of Zyklon B in a concentration camp and the world now knows about the gas chambers.

Fortunately the SS guard at Brinnlitz are no fanatics but middle-aged reservists.
