However, in some cases people react completely differently when they have power, in comparison to those who abuse that power. It is at these times when authority can be abused and used in the wrong way, this is when not only power is necessary, but the level of control as well. A sense of balance is required for the correct approach to be taken.In the play "The Removalists" written by David Williamson, set in the 170's there are excellent examples of misused power. Sergeant Simmonds abused his power and authority by doing little or no work, and then getting away with it for years. Simmonds uses his age, rank and experience in the police force to get respect, but his respect is assumed, not earned. Respect people show towards Simmonds is created from fear, Simmonds breaks the rules to enforce power on Ross and Kenny. Simmonds thinks that because there is no one willing to report him, he can break and bend rules if he wants or needs to. He even manipulates Ross into thinking that he is always right. When Ross questions his methods, Simmonds says, "stuff the rule book up your arse", signifying that Ross' inexperience means that he knows nothing about how to keep the peace, and that his methods have worked so far and there is no reason to change now. Simmonds constantly swears and uses colloquialisms to establish his position as a man of power and that he doesn't need to control his manner of speaking. From the very beginning Ross is verbally attacked by Simmonds with comments like "Your not a smart arse are you Ross", using examples of other recruits that weren't respectful enough to recognise how many years he'd been running things and how he "runs the show".The other two characters in this play are Fiona Carter and Kate Manson, who are sisters. These two also get involved in a power struggle, when Kate gets excited over Fiona being uncomfortable about showing the officers her bruises. In the film "One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest", the character Nurse Ratched has control of the patients on her ward from the beginning by being composed and controlled, she uses a firm but soft voice to control the patients, as opposed to swearing and intimidating the people she controls. Later in the movie, McMurphy tries again and successfully gains more of their respect and trust by taking them on a fishing trip; this is the best way to gain power...
